Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Inauguration Mass On Sunday, President Trump's high-stakes call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, meeting with top U.S. officials and European leaders to end Ukrainian War.
Zelenskyy spoke with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the residence of the U.S. ambassador in Rome. Zelenskyy said on social media that he stressed the need for “real diplomacy” and reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to a “full and unconditional ceasefire.”
"We also talked about the need for Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, battlefield situations and the upcoming prisoner exchange," he wrote. "The pressure on Russia is needed until they are eager to stop the war."
This is the first face-to-face meeting between Vance and Zelenskyy February meeting in the Oval Office.
Mr Trump said on Saturday that he plans to talk with Putin on Monday about stopping "blood baths" in Ukraine. He will then talk to Zelenskyy and the leaders of NATO countries.
Rubio says "Facing the Country with Margaret Brennan" in an interview aired on Sundayhe believes the only way these negotiations will continue to move forward is to meet Mr. Trump and Putin in person. He said Mr. Trump has Publicly propose one-on-one meeting.
"Setting up the mechanism for such a meeting will take some work, so I can't say that this is what we're talking about in terms of the location and dating," Rubio said. "But the president wants to do that. He wants to do it as soon as possible."
Asked if Russia and Ukraine are seeking to talk to “buy time,” Rubio said: “We will find out soon.”
"On the one hand, we are working to achieve peace and end a very bloody, expensive and destructive war. So there are certain elements of patience that require patience. On the other hand, we don't have time to waste. There are a lot of other things happening in the world and we need to pay attention to it."
Zelenskyy also met Pope Leo after mass.
The Ukrainian president wrote on social media: "The authority and voice of the Holy See can play an important role in ending this war."
He thanked the Vatican for being a platform for direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he spoke with Zelenskyy and Rubio at the Pope's inauguration. Meles said he had reached an agreement with leaders from France and Britain: "We will talk to the President of the United States again to prepare for this conversation."
"My firm impression is that Europeans and Americans are determined to work together, but now they are also aim-oriented to ensure that this terrible war is over soon," Meles told reporters.
Putin Zelenskyy's proposal was rejected Meeting face to face in Turkey after he proposed direct negotiations (although not at the presidential level) to replace an alternative to the 30-day ceasefire urged by Ukraine and its Western allies, including the United States
According to the heads of both delegations, negotiations in Istanbul broke down less than two hours later, although both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war. Vance also met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen on Sunday. Later that day, the Vice President will also meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with two leaders joining with British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
Vance told reporters before meeting with Meloni and von der Leyen that Europe is a "significant ally" of the United States, while noting that "we have some disagreements on issues such as trade, like friends do sometimes." He added that he hopes the dialogue will be "the beginning of some long-term trade negotiations and some long-term trade advantages between Europe and the United States."
Zelenskyy's meeting was the largest drone barrage against Ukraine in Ukraine since the start of the full invasion in 2022, following the first direct dialogue between Moscow and Kief in years failed to make a ceasefire after Friday's ceasefire.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched a total of 273 explosive drones and baits targeting Kiev, Dnypropelovsk and Donetsk regions in Ukraine. Of these, 88 people were intercepted, 128 were lost, and they might be blocked by electronics.
Yuriy Ihnat, head of the Air Force Communications Department, told the Associated Press that the barrage was the largest drone attack since the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia.
Previously, Russia's largest known drone attack was on the eve of the third anniversary of the war, when Russia slammed Ukraine with 267 drones.
The Russian Defense Ministry said air defense measures shot down seven Ukrainian drones and another seven Ukrainian drones on Sunday morning.
