WEST SACRAMANDO, Calif. - New York Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman tries to return from a left knee injury in the past month.
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Stroman would still be “discomfort” after having a live hitting practice in Tampa, Florida on Friday and will be reassessed before the team figures out what’s next in his recovery process.
"He had a lot of treatment for it," Boone said. "It's just that I can't overcome the final hump to really get him to the next level on the mound. We're going to try to keep mastering its weapons and try to make sure we take it from there."
Stroman hasn't pitched since the two-thirds of the inning against the San Francisco Giants on April 11. The next day, he was on the list of 15-day injuries, and Boone hoped that it was a short-term absence at the time.
But there is no right-handed return schedule, Boone said the injury could affect how Stroman pitched before Illinois. He was 0-1 at 11.57 in three games.
"Of course, the last start, I don't think he just can't get on that side as he needs to," Boone said. "I'm talking about these guys like racing, a small thing that could affect the last order or the last level extra you need. So we're going to keep trying to take him where we need it."
Stroman had surgery on March 19, 2015 to repair the ACL in his torn left knee. On September 12, he returned to Major League Baseball.
Stroman, 34, is in the second quarter of a two-year contract, guaranteeing $37 million. His deal includes a $16 million conditional player option in 2026, which can be exercised if he pitches in at least 140 innings this year.
Last season, Stroman hit a 154-inch inning innings with a score of 4.31 ERA in 30 games (29 games), the highest he has had with the Mets since 2021. Stroman struggled in the second half and did not pitch in the playoffs when the Yankees made their first World Series appearance since 2009.
In other injuries news, DJ Lemahieu played for the second consecutive day in a rehabilitation mission on Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and may play in Seattle's team this week for its debut. Lemahieu had a cortisone injection on his right hip last week, dealing with last year's injury.
