Charles Woodson, a 1997 Heisman Trophy champion and Michigan football icon, joined the Cleveland Browns as a limited partner. The Browns announced on Tuesday that they would join Woodson to their ownership group after approval at the NFL spring meeting in Minnesota.
Born as ownership and raised in Fremont, Ohio, Woodson has deep personal significance. He starred in Fremont Ross High School, and was named "Mr. Football" in Ohio State in 1994 after rushing yards and scoring records. His high school achievement laid the foundation for a large college career at the University of Michigan, where he became the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy and lead the Wolverines to a national championship in 1997.
Reflecting on his new role, Woodson said: "Growing up in Fremont, Ohio, playing in the National Football League was a dream. In my wildest childhood dream, I never considered the opportunity to be a limited partner of the NFL team, let alone my hometown of Cleveland Brown, Ohio."
Woodson has been working as a television analyst in football since retiring from the NFL in 2015 and currently serves as a commentator for Fox Sports. His new role as Browns Limited Partner will require adjustments to his broadcast responsibilities, including restricting access to team facilities and attending pre-game meetings, similar to the restrictions faced by Tom Brady, his Michigan alum and minority owner of the current Las Vegas Raiders.
In addition to his media work, Woodson entered the business world by intercepting the launch of wine and Woodson bourbon. However, NFL policy prohibits team owners from endorsing alcohol products, so his name and similarities need to be removed from these brands.
