A Utah woman claimed BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff raped, strangled and bitten her, and Provo police were reluctant to do anything after reporting it, according to a lawsuit filed in Utah state court on Wednesday.
The woman was identified as Jane Doe AG in the lawsuit, saying the attack occurred at her home in Retzlaff in November 2023.
"A year and a half after the rape and strangulation, Jane Doe Ag continued to experience extreme PTSD and other trauma symptoms as she worked to deal with what happened and kept moving forward," the lawsuit noted.
Retzlaff's attorney Mark Baute said in a statement that his client was "in fact innocent".
"We look forward to proving this innocence," Bowt said. "Jack's focus this year will be on football. We won't try cases in the media, we will respect the process and build Jack's innocence through the justice system."
A spokesperson for the BYU Sports Department and the Provo Police Department's email and phone number seeking comments did not return immediately.
The lawsuit says the woman and Retzlaff connected through social media in October 2023 and invited her to his location a few weeks before she was invited around November 22. The woman and a friend arrived at Retzlaff's home that night, and Retzlaff's friends and teammates also attended his home.
The lawsuit says that later that night, the woman's friend left, and since then, Rachelav and the woman started watching the movie.
"At some point, they started kissing, but Jane Doe Ag didn't want to do anything else," the lawsuit said. "Retzlaff started escalating the situation... Jane Doe Ag tried to slow down and tried to evacuate and said 'wait'. She didn't want to have any sex with him."
The lawsuit says the woman told Retlaff “no” and “wait, stop” but he continued to force himself. The lawsuit states in graphic details that after she tried to get out of bed, Retzlav placed his hand around her neck and continued to rape her.
"It hurt so much that it caused so much pain that Jane Doe Ag fainted," the lawsuit states. "Jane Doe Ag recalls the tears rolling down his face as he breathes."
A few days later, the woman went to the hospital where she performed a rape kit and took pictures of her injuries. The lawsuit claims she has ties to Provo police but did not initially share Retzlaff's name.
"At some point after talking to the police, an officer reached out to her for the name because others filed a complaint against the football player and the police wanted to see if it was the same person," the lawsuit said. "At that time, Jane Doe Ag shared Retzlaff's name, and Provo police encouraged her not to do anything because, as they claimed, 'sexual assault victims will never get justice.'"
Retzlaff played four games for BYU in November 2023, and he took over as the program's starting quarterback for the 2024 season as the United Captain. He moved from Riverside City College in Southern California to BYU.
