Baby Basics Provide Moses Basket for vulnerable families with newborn babies

A charity helps families with vulnerable babies say it is now supporting one of 16 boys and girls born in its county.

Based in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, Baby Basics offers a starter pack that includes essential items including diapers and clothing.

It sold donated goods that were not able to raise funds this weekend for the first time.

Its founder said she was “very worried” about the increase in recommendations over the past two years.

Sabrina Oakey, co-founder of the charity, said knitted items are particularly important. “Because many families receiving our packages may not have grandma, aunt or that family that can make these handmade items connected”.

Sabrina Oakey says she sees more families with two working parents

She is “very worried” about the number of families who need to serve.

“In the last two years alone, we have seen a 51% increase, which is a huge increase for our referrals.

"We think that a lot of this is an increase in the cost of living, but it also reduces the welfare of some families," she said.

She added that the charity has seen more families with both working parents but still need essentials.

It is expected to support about 500 babies this year — about 16 babies born in the county.

Laura Holmes-Trevino, who cared for the charity’s fundraiser, said he was very grateful for all the items donated by the general public.

But some of them cannot be used in distributed packaging.

“Usually, they are older items, sometimes for safety reasons, and we can’t guarantee it in the newborn’s home,” she said.
