Wife Mariano Rivera joins defendant in sexual abuse lawsuit

Former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and his wife Clara were added as defendants in a civil lawsuit filed by a girl and her mother, who said in 2018 the girl was sexually abused by a big child during an event related to Riverath Church in Westchester County, New York.

The lawsuit, filed in Westchester County Supreme Court in January, did not initially list Riveras as a defendant, but did accuse them of failing to protect the girl. The lawsuit replaces the shelter of hope - the church of Clara Rivera, a senior pastor - and a limited liability company that includes Riveras' former home address. They sold their homes in 2022.

The girl's attorney, Adam Horowitz, said Wednesday that she was added as a defendant in a court filing filed by the court that was finalized on Wednesday after confirming they had no contact with the LLC. He said the details in the lawsuit remained largely the same.

Riveras has not been charged with any criminal misconduct.

Riveras' attorney Joseph A. said the couple learned of the 2022 charges after receiving a letter from a lawyer seeking financial settlement.

According to the initial complaint, Clara Rivera suggested that the girl was a member of Riveras's Church, who participated in a summer camp internship program at an affiliated church in Florida in 2018, a lawsuit alleging that the child lives without parental supervision. The lawsuit alleges that the shelter paid for the girls’ expenses in connection with the program.

The lawsuit says the girl was born in 2007 and was “sexed sexually abused multiple times” by “older campers” when she attended the program at Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida and later at IGNITE LIFE CENTER at her home in Riveras.

The lawsuit says the girl's mother "learns to the information that makes her worry about the safety of the summer camp (girl)" after her daughter called.

The mother said in the lawsuit that she called Clara Rivera to divert her concerns.

As a lawsuit, Clara Rivera assured her mother that she would investigate and respond. Riveras traveled to Florida to see girls, "everyone isolates and intimidates separately," and kept silent about her experiences during her internship at Ignite Life Summer, including abuse, the lawsuit says.

Later in summer 2018, there was a barbecue in a house owned by Riveras in Rye, New York. According to the lawsuit, barbecue is only applicable to "minor children" who participate in asylum. The lawsuit states that the girl was “unsupervised” with the older child “unsupervised” and they abused her again, “engaging in sexual offences that constitute Section 130 of the New York Criminal Code.”

The lawsuit says the girl was sexually assaulted again in 2021, this time by a young male leader who hopes to take refuge. The lawsuit holds that in this case, the girl's mother discovered months of electronic communication between the two.

Afterward, the girl and her mother filed police reports on the abuse in 2018 and 2021 in New York and Florida.

The Associated Press reported in January that Ignite Life Center settled a lawsuit filed by three people represented by Horowitz — who said they had abused the teenagers by church volunteers. The other two charges affiliated with the church are the batteries of lust and lustfulness against minors.

The shelter of the shelter was founded in 2009 by Riveras, whose home was a gathering space and then moved to a building in New Rochelle, New York.

Mariano Rivera is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and is considered the largest close-up ever. He played all his 19 seasons with the Yankees and he won five World Series rings.
