Why Skipping WR in the 2025 NFL Draft is a Cowboys’ Stunning Drama

As there is no worthwhile prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft falls on the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have a wide range of receiver problems and they will have to deal with it. Except for Ceedee Lamb, no one on the current list resembles a starter. There is hope that players like Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo can join the role, but that is more wishful thinking than expected. Now, the situation looks bleak.

The 2025 NFL Draft was supposed to solve this problem for Dallas. The Cowboys ranked 12th in the first round with a total of 10 draft picks, with a wealth of resources that could easily be spent on one of the many WR prospects that make it to the NFL. However, when the push pushes, the Cowboys are on the clock, the front desk decides to go in a different direction. They drafted different positions in No. 12 and each draft pick has since drafted different positions. Guess what...this is the right thing.

WR demand may be the top of this year’s Cowboys roster and saves clubs $10 million in surplus value each season, but the prospects available do not match the demand. After Tetairoa McMillan took off the board, no WR deserves to be the Cowboys' top pick. The level below McMillan is the WRS, who seem to have achieved their potential, or are green and unreliable players.

The requests that were put down beforehand were unstable and resisted the resistance of WR and avoided subsequent errors. Forced WR would force Dallas to have years of commitment to players may not believe. This will be achieved with opportunity costs of Taylor Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku or Shavon Revel, and in the long run it may not pay off.

There is still a need for a Cowboys Depth Map, and unless something is taken to address it, the 2025 season may be a tough battle in Dallas, but there are other options. Free agents are still in the market, and trade options appear to be hanging on store windows. Teams like Green Bay and Tampa Bay are very in-depth on the depth chart. There is a good chance they will hope to move the extra roster away before the new season begins this September.

Ideally, when the cowboys air on the clock, there would be a great WR available, but sadly it didn't happen. Instead of forcing the problem and aggravating it, the team took a responsible approach and continued planning.

Fortunately, veterans will be added in the near future and valuable prospects will be found early in the next draft. The Cowboys’ wisdom is not to force this issue in 2025, but that won’t make WR vulnerabilities more and more important.
