"If you were a modern female LA boss. What would you wear?"
That's a question from "running point" fashion designer Salvador Perez Jr., asking to sort out the look of the Netflix series.
In the show, Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon, the new president of the fictional Los Angeles basketball team The Waves. The comedy of Mindy Kaling, Elaine Ko, David Stassen and Ike Barinholtz is based on the Los Angeles Lakers and is inspired by team owner Jeanie Buss.
In a conversation with Kaling, the bus makes her look simple and doesn't really dress up. Perez also doesn't want to be included in the "Corporate Boy Town Clothing". They have a fashionista with Hudson and have a great designer at Sophie Lopez. "We want to play with femininity, Kate wears beautiful clothes, so why not let her be a fabulous woman, embrace her femininity and make her femininity a part of her superpower, rather than hide it?"
So Perez and Lopez team up Isla's wardrobe together. When the audience first met her, Isla was primarily involved in charity work and did not take it seriously.
Perez said she would not buy new clothes. Instead, she pulled out of her existing closet when she worked as CEO for the waves.
One of the first outfits she wore was a tweed suit of a generation of love. She also wore a corset top in a suit. "It's her outfit," Perez explained.
When Isla participated in her first wave, she was wearing a bright pink Seroya suit and her look was still not right. Perez said in that scene: "This is not a company, but it's a suit. It's her idea 'I'm an adult, these are my adult clothes.'"
Perez made a deliberate choice to weave blue and orange into the look of Isla – the team’s colors. The office belongs to former President Cameron "Cam" Gordon (Justin Theroux), whose overall appearance is described by Perez as dark and grey, while the office itself is beige. "I want her to be the bright view of that office," Perez said.
When Isla began to control and began to take it seriously, her profile began to reflect the shift. Gabriela Hearst and his favorite daughter are Isla's favorite choice for power looks. "I think when she joined the closet, she brought things into the company's things, but there was still Isla's spin," Perez said. "There was a lot of vinyl and leather because Isla didn't change her identity, she just adapted to the business world in her own way."
example. When Isla heads to the owners’ meeting, Perez is wearing a Norma Kamali pinstripe suit again. "It happens to be a tough neckline, wearing a coat, but in her world, it's pinstripes."
By the end of the season, Perez will wear Isla in a pale pink suit designed by Sasuphi. The appearance is one of the favorites of fashion designers. "It was her last big game and it looked so good for Kate. We had to get used to it," he added. "I love this top, by the same designer, it has a double collar and beautiful cuffs of the coat. It feels like Isla grew up inside and she feels very comfortable as CEO."
Perez and Kaling’s collaboration and trust dating years came in handy when it was necessary to have ISLA accessories. Everyone agreed that one item Isla would have was a Birkin bag. There is no budget except Perez. He smiled and said, "I called Mindy and she said, 'Sar, welcome to my closet to shop, so I bought her luggage, including Birkin."
As for the bus’s reaction, Perez said the Lakers owner thanked him for “making me look good.”
His biggest challenge is not Isla, but with team costumes and wave girls. “We had to make and print all the uniforms,” Perez said. “Those took the longest time.”
