After being postponed twice due to the devastating wildfires raging in Southern California, the nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have finally been announced.
Wildfires have yet to abate, with a new blaze breaking out north of Los Angeles this week, the Hughes Fire.
But nominations went ahead as scheduled on Thursday, with the controversial experimental musical "Emilia Pérez" receiving the most nominations.
One of the 13 nominations made history: Karla Sofia Gascon became the first transgender woman to win best actress.
In the film, she plays a former drug cartel leader who secretly undergoes gender-affirming surgery and reinvents herself as a humanitarian in modern-day Mexico.
But her category will be one of the most talked about, with stiff competition from Demi Moore in "Material" and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres in the historical drama "I'm Still Here."
Broadway blockbuster "Wicked" has picked up 10 more Oscars, marking a strong year for Hollywood musicals. “The Brutalist,” a period drama about an architect who survives the Holocaust and moves to the United States, also received 10 nominations.
Other Oscar favorites this year include the Vatican drama "Conclave" and the Bob Dylan biopic "Unknown," which both received eight nominations.
Another six nominations went to the zany comedy "Anora," about a stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Some of the biggest snubs came in the crowded best actress category, with Mariah's Angelina Jolie, Babygirl's Nicole Kidman and Emilia Perez's Selena Gomez all receiving snubs.
But in a surprise nomination, Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan was recognized for his portrayal of US President Donald Trump in The Apprentice, a film about ambition and ego. .
