This is a Labubu world where we just live. While we’ve had the beanie baby supremacy cycle before, then squishmallows, and those naked Sunny Angel figurines popped up last year, there’s always a collection fashion that eliminates everyone else. But your eyes (and Tiktok feed) aren't tricking you - these toothy (and slightly creepy) plush dolls have taken over the internet. So what are Labubu dolls and why are they so famous?
What is a Labubu doll?
Labubu is produced by Pop Mart, a Chinese retailer known for its "blind boxes" that sells it randomly, so the colors and designs you pull are always amazing. This undoubtedly helps promote buzz and collectibility factors (especially with the popularity of unboxing content). Over 300+ Labubu versions over the past few years, each series release has brought a new set of dolls, but their popularity did soar in 2023 when Pop Mart released the first keychain version of this Gremlin Plush.

Labubu Dolls first appeared in 2015 as the Monsters book series by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, and in 2019, teamed up with Pop Mart. The lungs are “inspired by Nordic myths” to design the charming design of mischief monsters that are “undoubtedly elves who are not satisfied with the size of your average cat, and they are an unfortunate person who is a little dissatisfied with, a little bit of misfortune who commits an unfortunate monster. Originally a side character in the series, it is described as “a small, kind creature with sharp ears and jagged teeth that always make sense, but usually fervently opposed in his well-intentioned attempt to help. ”
Since then, the key version has been reportedly sold online consistently in minutes, partly due to the current Bag Charm trend that sees everyone get to use the Kitschy KeyChains auxiliary tote bags and wallets. Their "ugly" looks - think of pointed teeth, rabbit ears and playful smiles - even made Hollywood charming the body and soul. Recently I saw the furry collection on the designer bags for everyone at Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian. It also became the "It" bag charm of influencers, socialites, royals (Ubol Ratana, the eldest son of former Thai king Bhumibol Adulyadej), who carried a giant Labubu doll last summer). But their biggest fan so far is Blackpink's Lisa.
Lisa has been a longtime fan of pop concert charm and even posted a photo on Coachella this year, rocking the company's other popular Cry Baby Keykeains. “(My close friend in Thailand) showed me a bunch of things and once I got them I went crazy,” Lisa told Vanity Fair In a recent interview about her Labubu obsession. She shared: "I spent all the money. If I fly to New York, I go to Miami, I go to Miami, I try to find pop concert halls there, Paris. A little bit of a search for treasures."
Monsters even saw the record day of Monsters: Large Energy Series on April 25, which includes seven new Labubus, six of which were named after an emotion (the seventh is a rare and secret version with black fur and rainbow teeth). Dolls sold out in record time again, and dealers saw the day perform so much that the platform said it disappointed the PS5 and Barbie Doll Signature Lebron James Doll is the top trading product.
