Elon Musk's star-striped link received expected state approval in India, and eventually failed after SpaceX's previous attempt to launch its satellite broadband in the country.
A senior official confirmed that the Indian Ministry of Telecom paid tribute to Starlink on Wednesday to start working hard in South Asian countries.
Starlink now has to submit a document showing that it meets the licensing requirements. Earlier this week, New Delhi released its rules for global mobile personal communications (PDFs) for satellite (GMPCS) operators, setting clear security guidelines for companies including Starlink, Amazon's Kuiper and others.
Some of these rules will help the Indian government review content and intercept traffic, as it does with ground network operators and limit user terminal access to “coverage from outside the geographic closure is and/or through gateways outside India”. Satellite companies need to comply with their operations in the country.
SpaceX also needs permission from India’s space regulator, the National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-Space), to make its satellite-based communications services.
For those familiar with this, it will take six to nine months for Starlink's official launch of connectivity in India.
Nevertheless, the latest move is the Indian government’s enthusiastic gesture towards Musk, who has been hoping to launch Starlink in the country for quite some time to expand its user base. India has a population of more than 1.4 billion, but only about 950 million Internet subscribers, making Starlink's tempting market or any other company that sells internet connections in different ways.

Book nowThe approval comes about two months after Telecom India Airtel and Reliance Jio announced a partnership with SpaceX to launch Starlink's high-speed internet service in the country. However, because Starlink requires independent regulatory approval, launching a plan through these partnerships is not a straightforward thing.
In 2022, SpaceX was criticized for launching Starlink service in India without obtaining the necessary license. The company must return its device reservations before obtaining the necessary permissions.
However, due to Musk's close relationship with Trump, the current environment has changed Starlink. Starlink is also reportedly used as a leverage for countries preparing for trade negotiations with the United States
Last month, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met with Star Link executives at his office in New Delhi, including his Indian spear Parnil Urdhwareshe. It was two months after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Musk Musk also recently announced plans to visit India this year. The visit may be an opportunity for billionaires to oversee Tesla's business advancements in India, as EV automakers are also looking at the world's most populous country - besides the launch of Starlink.
That being said, Starlink is likely to face local and international competition in the country’s satellite internet space, as OneWeb has already obtained approval for space and space, while Jio Spacefiber (Jio Spacefiber) is a joint venture between Reliance Jio and SES, which has been approved in Space and Space, Space and Amazon’s Kuiper, or can be approved.
The Indian government has not yet shared details about the scope of satellite internet companies. In the second half of 2023, the government launched spectrum allocation for satellite services through the introduction of a new telecommunications bill. However, the exact requirements and fees it will charge are yet to be announced.
SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment.
