MPs have voted in favor of proposals to legalize assisted dying in England and Wales.
this bill It will now face months of debate and scrutiny from MPs and peers, who can choose to amend it and gain approval from both houses of parliament before it becomes law.
There's also a chance the bill would be vetoed and not become law at all.
The bill, known as the Terminal Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, will make it legal for terminally ill people aged over 18 to receive assistance to end their lives.
But there are requirements:
Under the bill, doctors can prepare "approved" substances (the bill does not specify what drugs this is), but patients themselves must take them.
No doctor or anyone else is allowed to give medication to a terminally ill patient.
The doctor stays with the patient until they self-administer the substance and die (or the doctor determines the procedure failed).
The person can decide not to take it, in which case a doctor must remove the substance immediately.
Doctors also have no obligation to participate in the assisted dying process.
This is called physician-assisted suicide. Voluntary euthanasia is different Health professionals administer medications to patients.
Deaths covered by the Assisted Suicide Act do not require a coroner's inquest.
But the bill makes it illegal for anyone to pressure, coerce or use dishonest means to get someone to declare a wish to end their life or to induce someone to self-administer an approved medicine.
If someone is convicted of any of the above acts, they could face up to 14 years in prison.
The bill does not include the cost of the system costwho will pay and what the workload will be.
There were no details about the judicial process, namely how evidence would be presented to a High Court judge.
Former chief justice Lord Thomas told the BBC's Today program it could not be a "rubber stamp process" and judges had to be satisfied there was no coercion.
People seeking assisted dying are advised to consider telling their family and GP, but this is not legally necessary.
