Virat Kohli retired from the Test, putting Indian cricket in trouble, and the sports world gasped in surprise.
Following the resignation of Rohit Sharma a few days ago, India combined for a double blow, they embarked on a tough tour of the five Test series without two experienced hitters in June.
Like Sharma, Kohli went to Instagram, where he directed more than 270 million followers to retire publicly.
“It wasn’t easy when I left this format – but it felt right…” he explained to his frustrated fans.
This highlights Kohli's global appeal since past and present, young and young cricketers, and legends from other disciplines such as tennis ace Novak Djokovic and football star Harry Kane.
Leading India to win the Under-19 World Cup in 2008, while Kohli was the picker at the time, former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar quickly tracked international cricket against the judgment of others in the cricket body.
"Many people on the Indian cricket committee think he is too young, but he scored very well in domestic cricket and the hunger of success was obvious to him," Vengsarkar recalled.
An example of Kohli's compulsive enthusiasm for the sport is the pain-filled person. Kohli is competing for his second Ranji Trophy match for Delhi. His father suddenly died in a crisis with his team. After the funeral, he went back and fought 90 battles.
Vengsarkar's approved eye received a Kohli A ODI debut in 2009. At the age of 23, he was the youngest member of the 2011 ODI World Cup champion team under MS Dhoni. A few weeks later, he made his debut in the West Indies. For months, Kohli was in threat during a disastrous tour in Australia, his teenage girl, Kohli, was in trouble and never looked back. Within a few years, he established his outstanding batsman of his generation.
Brave and provocative, without benign muscles in his body, he was as volatile as potassium on water in his early years. He is not afraid to accept his best-known opponents and is often addicted to the on-field frozen enzymes that sometimes win his criticism.
Happily, this is not about being his decisive identity in cricket. In the impulsive style across formats, prolific running offers another more compelling dimension and takes him to the top.
When his idol Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013, Kohli used his extensive skills to snatch the baton hungryly and then drew one of the best professions in cricket history.
He waved the bat like a Jedi, with high skills and told the thrust to kill his opponent. Add to his high octane character, his flashing batting makes him a cult hero, and his presence makes the box office come back anywhere he has played.
Kohli always wears her passion on her sleeves. He always showed drama and drama on the court, but for a period of time, the anxiety of misplaced status was sublimated into an angry inner pursuit of excellence, making him dizzy.
Marriage to movie star Anushka Sharma made them the most important couple in the country, both of which received even more intense attention.
From a metaphorical point of view, Kohli's outstanding exploitation, especially in the first decade of his career, represents the emerging 21st century India: undisguised, mercilessly ambitious, discarding all the demons of the past, willing to do their best in the world.
His cross-format achievements are huge.
In ODI, he ranks third in Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakarra but has the best average (57.88) among bats who have played 100 games. His ability to win ODI games in the toughest chase is something of folklore, with many pursuits in his 51st century record.
His runs in the 2020s and centuries have not brought him into the top five, but he immortalized himself with an incredible knock on the door, especially at the age of 82, without the exciting, pulsating match against Pakistan at the 2022 World Cup, and he won a huge 76 in the 2024 final against the Indian champion in 2024.
He is also the highest scorer in the history of the Indian Premier League.
At one point, Kohli scored over 50+ in all three formats, making him the most productive and hardest hitter of his time - leading the way over contemporary Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. The four were locked in a fascinating long-term batting hegemony contest.
Kohli's career inexplicably reversed when it seemed like he would break all the batting records. From the beginning of the pandemic, the running flow began to rise and became a trick around for centuries. Between 2014 and 2019, he has been unstoppable, scoring six centuries in just 18 months at a time.
The running drought is the worst in Test cricket matches, with his average dropping from more than 55 players above 2019 to the current 46.75. During this period, Kohli also lost his captain, although his international cricket game remained the same.
Kohli ended his exam career with 9,230 runs, which put him in the overall ranking of 19th and fourth among Indians, behind Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar, all of which ended with over 50 and more centuries. But only by judging him on this code will reduce his huge impact on this format.
As the captain, Kohli easily broke into Gavaskar, Tendulkar and Dravid. In Test cricket, he won 40 of his 68 games, making him the fourth most successful game in the format. In the case of India, this is the Himalayan proportion.
Former Australian captain Greg Chappell said Kohli's energy, perseverance, purpose and aura were "transformative" for Indian cricket. Chapel tagged him as the most influential Indian captain, even before Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni.
Ravi Shastri, former Indian captain and chief coach who has worked with Kohli for many years, gave a first-hand view.
"Kohli has incorporated India into a combat division, especially when playing overseas," Shastri said.
According to Shastri, there is a lack of ICC and IPL titles, which is an index of his captain's abilities.
“He always plays the win, seeking and developing fast bowlers to win overseas, demanding the high intentions and supreme fitness of all players to put himself at the forefront, not the backseat driver.”
In the seven years of Kohli and Shastri’s collaboration, India has ranked in the top three ICCs in almost all formats in a row, which is unprecedented.
The most precious and most significant win during this period was in 2018, when India defeated Australia in its own backyard in the Test Series for the first time.
Australia is where Kohli plays a huge aggression, earning 692 runs in four tests in 2014-15. In 2018, he served as captain and batsman, breaking down the impeccable psychological barriers so far. In 2020, Kohli was traveling to Australia, and only played one game (lost), back to the birth of his child. But India continued to win the rubber with its dramatic vision series after overcoming its mental disorder two years ago.
Australia is Kohli's blessed hunting ground, and his last visit in late 2024 attracted worldwide attention. He started with the roar and broke into a century in Perth's first test. But his form is shocking, with only 190 out of five tests.
The decision to help him retire is controversial. As many years went on, people were constantly under severe scrutiny, hoping to get close to the scene with his young family and the scene filled with scenes in Indian cricket, and undoubtedly played a role.
Kohli ended his retirement position on Instagram.
"I always look back on my exam career with a smile. #269 signing," he wrote.
The greatest ambassador has entered the sunset over the past decade and a half.
