Jake Paul’s most valuable promotion has signed some of the most accomplished female fighters in the past 60 days, radiating women’s boxing in the past 60 days. Shortly after announcing a trilogy battle between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano on July 11, Marshall was filled with some compelling matches at Madison Square Garden, with five title fights.
The event will also be broadcast on Netflix and expose many of these boxers to the largest viewer they participate in in front of them. Not to mention, on June 28, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm will return to boxing for the first time in 12 years, with Jake Paul and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
With MVP investing in women’s boxing, can we enter a period of sport that is similar to what the WNBA experienced in 2024?
While the name is important, the competition is equally important. ESPN has carefully looked at the announced showdown and the future of each highly-watched MVP.
Holm, a member of the 2022 International Boxing Hall of Fame, hopes to win his final title before retiring. Her opponents in Vega are little known, but if Holm could overcome her father's time, she might find herself in a battle with one of four lightweight champions.
Terri Harper (WBO), Beatriz Ferreira (IBF), Stephanie Han (WBA) and Caroline Dubois (WBC) are the current champions, three of four actions over the next two months. Harper faces Natalie Zimmerman on May 23, Ferreira against Maria Ines Ferreyrra on June 7, and Han will defend his title on July 12. If Holm wins, she will likely be pushed onto a ladder to face one of the champions in the next battle.
What’s really striking is that the winner could have a showdown with former undisputed super middleweight champion Claressa Shields, who defended her undisputed heavyweight title against Lani Daniels on July 26.
Shields is a five-pointer champion with a history of Marshall and Green. When Marshall beat her at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championship, she was still the only fighter to beat a shield or a professional. Shields won the undisputed middleweight title in 2022, winning losses for Marshall among professional players. Over the past few years, Green has walked back and forth with the Shields in interviews and welcomed the battle with Green. If Greene could frustrate Marshall, the battle between the two could be achieved.
As for the battle itself, Marshall and Green can be said to be the two biggest punchers in the women's boxing match, with a total of 21 shutdowns in 30 games. Marshall is the more technical voice of the two and should be a betting favorite, but she has not been in the boxing ring since 2023 and has been removed from ESPN's pound list due to inactivity. Last June, she bypassed the detour of mixed martial arts in a battle in the PFL, while Greene defeated Melinda Watpool in a Jake Paul botched Mike Tyson’s botched-back.
ESPN's 8th-pound fighter Baumgardner was brought into the joint event on the stacked Taylor-Serrano 3 Undercard, which illustrates what the MVP saw in her star potential. The undisputed junior lightweight champion will be 31 when stepping into the ring with Miranda, her entertainment style and Gab's gifts are extremely sold. Despite being undefeated, her opponents fought fewer opposition in Spain. Baumgardner was tested in combat and had the power to flourish with his right hand.
If she surpasses Miranda, then her next battle will have many choices. She can stay firm in the Junior lightweight competition and defend her undisputed identity in the match against Delfine Persoon, or move up lightweight and start a belted journey at another heavyweight level. Or can I have a showdown with Holm?
Scotney was the youngest of the MVP's recent signing at the age of 27 and has not been tested in the field. Her unanimous decision to win the IBF Junior lightweight title in 2023 was her most impressive in the 10 wins of the British Woman. Scotney also has a WBO belt, and his prospects are bright, he is beating ESPN's pound-pound list, but must first withdraw Mercado's challenge, who won an impressive victory against Ramla Ali last June in defending her WBC title.
Scottney is the most popular (-900 per ESPN bet), but is expected to test the experienced Mercado. Despite their same age, Mercado has fought 17 professional battles with Amanda Serrano in a decision-making defeat in 2021. Scotney's victory in her American debut will have a title, becoming the undisputed champion at 122 pounds and fighting Mayelli Flores Rosquero (Mayelli Flores Rosquero) to beat Nazarena Romero on May 10. Romero is exercising her rematch terms, which may be expected to fight Scottney-Mercado's title for an undisputed title battle until early 2026.
The battle of Thorslund-Metcalf is perhaps the most competitive battle on Taylor-Serrano's bot. The 31-year-old undefeated Thorslund is ESPN's 10th-pound women's fighter and has been a world champion since 2018. Since her debut, WBC and WBO champion Thorslund have dominated her 23 wins, dominating her 23 wins, rarely losing more than two rounds on a minute card. Danish fighters will try to win the IBF championship of Metcalf to make the undisputed step in the blistering class.
Metcalf also signed with MVP - probably a little older than Thorslund when she was 40, but she has made a lot of progress in her boxing career since she started her 12-1-1 over the next seven years. Metcalf is a clumsy fighter who defeated Miyo Yoshida in October to capture gold. If Thorslund beat Metcalf, date Johnson to determine the undisputed bantamweight champion. Johnson, who won two consecutive battles since losing to Scottney in 2023, won two consecutive games, with Nina Hughes' seventh round suspension as WBA champion in March.
