Wes Anderson strung Donald Trump's proposed foreign film tariffs at a Cannes press conference for his new film The Phoenician Spine and questioned how it would work.
The director evoked laughter, "Can you lift the movie in customs? It's not shipped that way."
The "Phoenician Project" filmed in Germany. When asked about the tariffs, Anderson initially replied: "I thought you said he was giving us plugs or something. Did Trump see it?"
But he then went on to laugh at the idea: "Tariffs are interesting because I've never heard of 100% tariffs before. I'm not an expert in that economics field, but I think it means he said he's going to take all the money. Then what will we get, what will we get?
The movie is a three-wave of a liar, starring Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera and the groundbreaking Mia Treeapleton, the daughter of Kate Winslet. Del Toro plays business tycoon ZSA-ZSA Korda, one of Europe's wealthiest people and the subject of repeated assassination attempts, while Treapleton portrays his estranged daughter, a nun who smokes and drinks, named Sister Sister liesel. Like Threeapleton, Cera is a newcomer to Anderson's troops, playing a repetitive mentor named Bjorn Lund.
Speaking about the beginning of the film’s ideation, Anderson said that he and co-written Roman Coppola initially planned to write about some “very dark” business tycoons who “didn’t really care about how he empowered himself to make big decisions for the world, thus affecting the world’s labor force and landscape population.”
Anderson added, "We're building some kind of darkness of capitalists, but it takes us somewhere else. We need a psychiatrist's couch to really answer correctly, even then I didn't know. But it's in DNA, in some way, in some way."
He then revealed his next project, which he said was co-written with Coppola and Richard Ayoade, who was also in the Phoenician Project. "Rome and Richard and I are working on the script for the movie together, and I think it does have darkness," Anderson said.
Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch Cumbatch), they both starred in one of the previous Anderserson.
Starting May 30, the Phoenician Project will receive limited dramatic releases from the Focus feature. The film will expand its wider drama on June 6.
