Los Angeles County prosecutors filed criminal charges Tuesday, Jillian Lauren Shriner, a bestselling author who married Wezebassist Scott Shriner, after an incident last month that allegedly injured by police after she was shot at them in the backyard.
The author, published in a last name, appeared in a court building in downtown Los Angeles, pleaded not guilty to felony charges because they deliberately released a gun in serious negligence and assaulted a person with semi-drugs. Prosecutors are also seeking enhanced gun sentencing. If convicted, she faces a state prison of up to 19 years.
Lauren, 51, wore an all-white suit when she participated in her confession in front of a judge. She and her attorneys Hilary Potashner and Kim Wilkinson declined to comment after the hearing.
Lauren was originally booked on April 9 for suspected confusing encounters with LAPD. That afternoon, officers were looking for three suspects of crashes after a crash on Highway 134. According to a 911 call in the area, the suspect attempted to hide in a nearby backyard around Eagle Rock.
The pursuit of officials who led to Lauren's property, confrontation occurred while she stood in the backyard with a handgun.
Police body cameras and home surveillance videos appear to show Lauren lifting his gun and pointing it at the fence where police are covering it. Police said she rejected their order to drop their weapons and shoot them. Police said they shot backwards and hit Lauren.
She fled to her home, stayed for about an hour before being hospitalized, and was later detained by the Highway Patrol.
Lauren may not be able to hear some signs as a police helicopter hovered above the scene, possibly mistakenly thinking they were suspects of crash crimes. In a video posted by LAPD, a neighbor can be heard telling 911 dispatcher Lauren to be confused about what happened: "There are three men, one of whom shot her and the police are now looking for him... They took the gun out."
The New Jersey native was named the New York Times bestselling author, and her books Everything You Want and Some Girls: My Life in the Harem tells the story of her encounter with Prince Jeffrey Burkia of Brian. Recently, she published “Looking at Monsters: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer,” the heart of serial killer Samuel Little. She and Shriner have been married since 2005 and they have two sons together.
Lauren's preliminary hearing determines whether the case against her is moving forward is scheduled for June 18.
