The Pentagon is evacuating 1,000 military members who are publicly identified as transgender and removing themselves for those who have not been publicly identified as transgender for 30 days, according to new directives issued Thursday.

The memorandum was driven by a Supreme Court ruling on Tuesday, allowing the Trump administration to enforce a ban on transmilitary members. The Ministry of Defense said it will browse the medical records to identify others who have not stood up.

Officials said 4,240 soldiers were diagnosed with active-duty gender irritability, the National Guard and Reserve Services, a small percentage of which were 2 million people on service, although they acknowledged that number could be higher.

The memo, released on Thursday, was issued in February, but at that time, any lawsuits were stalled. When the initial Pentagon directive was released earlier this year, it gave service members 30 days to self-identify. Since then, about 1,000 people have done so.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that the 1,000 troops who already identified themselves “will begin a voluntary separation process.”

Spartan Pride spokesman Rae Timberlake is one of the 1,000 people who choose to identify themselves. Timberlake has served in the Navy for 17 years and said trans service members who do not accept the current offer may lose benefits that require years of service.

"There is no guarantee of getting your pension, severance or glorious release," Timberlake said.

Although Timberlake decided to leave, they said many cross-troops would continue to serve if allowed.

"It's not voluntary. It's a decision that people have to make under coercion," Timberlake said. "If there is no condition to force them to make decisions for their happiness, or for a long time, they will force them to make decisions."

The move is the latest target of the Trump administration to target trans members of the military and transgender people. After Trump took office and issued a series of gender-focused executive orders, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) began a health care crackdown for LGBTQ+ veterans, starting with the revocation of VA Directive 1341, thus eliminating treatment for gender dysphagia.

The expulsion of trans service members is consistent with the past view of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that women are not suitable for combat roles, when military recruitment struggled deeply, while veterans expressed concerns that potential VA cuts could further hinder young Americans from enlisting.

Heggs doubled his hard-wired approach when he announced the demolition on Thursday. "We abandoned choking and weakness. There are no more pronouns," Hegseth wrote in his X post on Thursday. "We've done that."
