Houston - With 8:21 left in the first quarter, Stephen Curry rolled out three pointers, and Rockets' Alperen Sengun and Dillon Brooks flew towards him.
After the shot was released, Brooks' right arm touched Curry's right hand and his injured thumb was injured. But no foul was caused by an angry curry waving his movements at the officials with his right arm. A moment later, Steve Kerr also tried to plead with the officials.
After the Rockets defeated the Warriors 131-116 in Game 5 at the Toyota Center, Curry, Kerr and the Warriors were asked whether Brooks and the Rockets were trying to intentionally hit Curry's injured right thumb, a hit rate he allowed after shooting, which NBA rules allowed after shooting.
The Warriors didn't raise the topic, but in Golden State broadcasters pointed out that the Rockets had repeatedly targeted Curry's thumbs in Game 4 and Game 5, and reporters asked them repeatedly.
"You don't think about that," Curry said, who said he scored 13 points and seven assists in 23 minutes on Wednesday night. "If it's a foul, they should call it."
Curry first suffered a thumb injury in January and said he would be hit again every time he started getting better. The thumb gets better, but then he reconstituted the wear and tear in his second regular season game.
Curry played a lap around his thumb and was treated at the end of the game. He said that would not affect how he plays.
"This is something I'm dealing with," he said.
When asked about the Rockets hit Curry in the thumb, the Warriors also noticed.
"I think it's obvious, but that's the truth," he said. "I'm not what a person who crys to you should do."
Kerr won't blame the player for trying to take advantage of any advantage in the rules. But he said the league needs to adjust the rules next season.
"So, once the shot is, the rules are released, and you can hit a man's arm," Kerr said. "So, what's happening in the league this year is always, players always go beyond the rules. They know what they're doing. So, players across the league are just shooting in the guys' shooters after they're released because they know it won't be fouled. And I'm very confident that the league will fix this next year because it's just losing something on someone's thumb, but doing anything or anything, but that's all.
"I do believe that they can call publicly if they want. If one person finishes and shoots a call, the referee can call publicly. But, no, that's what happened throughout the league for a whole year. It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of, but we have to change that change through the process of the league."
When telling Golden State Radio, Brooks mocked him when he hit Curry in the thumb after release, saying, “I’ve been playing games.”
"If (someone) injured ankle, I attacked my ankle every time," Brooks said. "So, no matter what they say on the radio, they can keep saying it."
Curry has scored a total of 25 shots in the last two games, including 5 of 17 shots from the 3-point arc. He has scored a total of 30 points in that span since 5 of 36 points and 13-pointers in Game 3.
However, Game 5 led 30 times in Houston's second quarter, before Kerr had a 5:50 starter left in the third inning. Curry has more problems with choking defense with Amen Thompson. Thompson had five steals in the first half alone.
"No, I don't think it will affect him," Kerr said of Curry's thumb. “It’s just everything the players are going to do.
Although they were 31 behind in a game-ending game, the Warriors were not panicking. They were in a similar dilemma when they led 3-1 against the Grizzlies in the second round and led 134-95 in Memphis Game 5. The Warriors were 55 behind in the third quarter of that game, when the arena played the song "Whoop That Trick!". This has become a tradition to stir up the Grizzlies’ victory. Green dances famously, waving a towel, even though his team is big.
The Warriors ended the Grizzlies in Game 6 and went on to win the fourth championship in the Curry Era.
"You kind of see everything. They didn't play 'hoop'trict', but they might have, too." "But yes, at this point in our career, we've seen all the experiences. So you have something to draw. Yes, they played a great game. Whether they had a win of one or a 50, it was a playoff series. It was a win."
Green could see adjustments with assistant coach and Jimmy Butler during the game, saying the Warriors "quickly open the page."
Kerr said he will rely on him, Curry and Green's championship bloodline. He cited how Butler got his bounce from lost opportunities, and could also end a team in the playoff series.
"Our guys are here a lot," Kerr said. "Jimmy is here many times. I think a few years ago (in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals), Jimmy was part of that Miami team, who lost the next three games against Boston 3-0, and then had to win in Game 7. That's what the playoffs mean."
Butler said he and the Warriors will prepare for their sixth game at Chase Center on Friday.
“We’re good,” Butler said. “Our confidence will not be shaken.”
