Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBA) is an American multinational company that operates a chain of retail pharmacy stores and pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution businesses.

The company is increasing the number of retail locations it serves on MFC that rely on robotic automation to process high volumes of prescriptions to manage patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The goal is to reduce the burden on pharmacy staff by reducing routine tasks and reducing inventory waste. This shift gives pharmacists more time to conduct direct patient care, including services such as immune and diagnostic testing.

The New Brooklyn Park Center will support nearly 200 Walgreens stores in the Midwest (145 in Minnesota), and is expected to fill about 13 million prescriptions each year. It will also create more than 175 new jobs and generate significant tax contributions at the state and county levels.

Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBA) initially launched these robot fulfillment centers in 2021, but temporarily suspended its launch in 2023 to fine-tune operations and collect feedback. After implementing the upgrades over the past year and developing new internal tools, the company is now confident that it will restart the expansion of the technology.

Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBA) now operates 12 micro-box office centers nationwide, which collectively supports its more than 5,000 stores and process more than 3.5 million prescription orders per week. These senior fulfillment centers have achieved good results. Prescription shipments at these facilities increased by 24% year-on-year, with approximately 16 million fillings per month. In supported stores, MFC now processes 40% of all prescriptions, releasing pharmacists to focus on patient care such as vaccination. Additionally, a recycling program at these centers helped transfer 3.7 million pounds of cardboard, plastic and toner from landfills in fiscal 2024.
