Volvo Cars has begun producing its all-electric EX30 small SUV at its Ghent manufacturing plant in Belgium.
The Ghent factory will also start manufacturing the EX30 off-road later this year.
The addition of EX30 production at the Ghent plant has created approximately 350 new jobs, increasing the total employment to nearly 6,600.
Francesca Gamboni, Chief Manufacturing and Supply Chain Officer of Volvo Cars, said: “The EX30 is crucial to us as we continue to strengthen our position in the European premium electric vehicle market.
“Investing in Ghent’s Ex30’s European production is in line with our long-standing strategy to build the cars they sell the most. Our flexible global footprint contributes to our resilience and allows us to adapt our manufacturing plans with agility.”
In recent years, the company has invested approximately €227 million (USD 227 million) in the Ghent facility to boost production of EX30.
The investment has led to a new automotive platform with nearly 600 new or refurbished robots installed, expansion of the battery hall, new door production lines and battery assembly lines.
According to the company, production of European EX30 supports the EU's sustainability and competitiveness agenda.
The small SUV was introduced in late 2023, and the company calls it "one of Europe's best-selling electric vehicles of 2024".
The Ghent plant in Belgium and the Tuslanda plant in Sweden now produces ten different electric and hybrid models in Europe.
Stefan Fesser, Volvo Car Plant Factory Manager, added: “After the decision to bring EX30 production to Ghent in the fall of 2023, we are able to model the new car in a record time.
“Thanks to the participation and collaboration of the entire Ghent team, we have cut industrialization time by half. Today, we are very proud to welcome Ex30 and prove that new technologies and innovations have allowed us to respond more flexibly to market demand.”
The Ghent factory has been operating since 1965 and is said to be the only remaining "fully developed" automobile manufacturing plant in the country.
The company's third car manufacturing plant in Europe is being built in Slovakia.
In addition to the EX30 variant, Ghent plants produce other electrified models, including all-electric EX40 and EC40, as well as XC40 and V60 hybrid models.
In 2024, the Ghent plant produced more than 186,000 cars.
The latest announcement comes as Volvo Cars reported that global sales fell 10% in March 2025 due to lower sales of all-electric vehicles.
"The Revolutionary Factory of Volvo Cars in Belgium's Volvo Cars Production" was originally created and released by global equity brand Auto.
