Visa and Mastercard unveil AI-powered shopping

Artificial intelligence is not only permeating the entrepreneurial world. Now, credit card giants Visa and MasterCard are entering the AI game. Visa announced on Wednesday that the commerce has enabled AI to “find and buy”.

AI agents will be able to shop and purchase on behalf of consumers based on pre-selected preferences.

"Every consumer has set restrictions and Visa helps manage the rest," Jack Forestell, chief product and strategy officer of Visa, said in a statement.

Visa said it is mixing with technology giants and startups to develop an AI-powered shopping experience that is “more personal, safer and more convenient”. These companies include Humans, IBM, Microsoft, Mismtral AI, OpenAI, Confused, Samsung and Stripe, among others.

The move comes after Mastercard announced Tuesday that it would enable AI agents to shop for consumers online. Mastercard says its new agent payments “will enhance generative AI conversations to people and businesses” by integrating payments into tailored suggestions and insights already provided on the conversation platform.

"This means that for an upcoming young man who has planned her own milestone birthday party, she can now chat with AI agents to proactively curate a range of clothing and accessories from local boutiques and online retailers based on her style, venue atmosphere and weather forecasts, and pay for her preferences and feedback, and recommend a model voucher."

Mastercard said it will work with Microsoft in new use cases to expand "agent commerce" and other aspects of AI-powered shopping, as well as IBM, Braintree and Checkout.com.

Visa and Mastercard are not the only visas that allow AI-powered shopping. Earlier this month, Amazon announced it began testing new AI shopping agents, a feature called "Buy for Me", a part of its users. Openai, Google, and Google and Clplexity also showcase similar agents that can access the website and help users make purchases. Openai said on Monday that it is updating Chatgpt search, a web search tool in Chatgpt, to provide users with an improved online shopping experience.
