Vanuatu authorities are considering revoking Andrew Tate's citizenship after he revealed he received a golden passport while being arrested in Romania in 2022 for rape and human trafficking.

The self-proclaimed misogynist influencer gained citizenship under the Quick Track Program, according to a survey from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

The plan raised security issues and led the EU to revoke Vanuatu's visa-free privileges by the end of 2024.

A Vanuatu government spokesman said authorities were "certainly investigating" Tate's citizenship.

"Once we have the documents in hand, these processes can revoke his citizenship," Kiery Manassah told ABC News.

"The government does not want to encourage people with suspicious backgrounds to be granted citizenship," he added. "Those who are wanted by their country or investigated by police authorities abroad are not welcome to be part of Vanuatu citizens."

The passport or citizenship of an investment plan is a source of income for countries such as Vanuatu. But organized criminal suspects, oligarchs and even intelligence personnel abused them, said Aubrey Belford, chief editor of the Pacific of OCCRP.

"This has caused a lot of alarms because it is one of the loopholes that allow people to get new passports and even new identities and be able to escape law enforcement," Belford told ABC News.

Vanuatu granted Tate citizenship in December 2022. That same month, Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested in Romania and have since been mostly travel restrictions in the country.

Vanuatu has no formal extradition treaty with Romania.

It is unclear whether Tristan Tate has also obtained Vanuatu citizenship.

Andrew Tate has built a large number of online businesses in recent years, including over 10 million followers on X, sharing his lifestyle of express trains, private jets and yachts.

He also proudly declared himself “misogyny” because of his perception of women and used extreme language related to violence against women.

He was also picked out by British authorities to spread the effects of misogyny among boys and young people.

Both Tate brothers were born in the United States, but after their parents divorced, they moved to Luton, England with their mother.

They deny allegations of criminal wrongdoing.

In addition, the UK is seeking extradition from Romania after being accused of rape, actual physical injury and human trafficking in 2024.

The brothers' lawyers said they would return to the UK to face the allegations, due to the charges between 2012 and 2015.

The Romanian court ruled that the brothers could be extradited to the UK after any trial was over.
