Utah selects Mammoth as mascot, ending a year-long search

Goodbye, Utah Hockey Club. Ivory, Utah Mammoth.

After a 13-month process, including trademark drama and more than 850,000 votes in multiple rounds of votes, the Utah Mammoth has been revealed as the new name and permanent identity of the NHL series.

It replaces Utah Hockey Club, the interim name for the 2024-25 season of the Smith Entertainment Group purchased and put the former Arizona Coyotes series.

“We did something unprecedented when naming the team — after four rounds of community voting, including not only receiving potential names, but also getting feedback on potential logos,” Utah owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said in a statement. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, which is a symbol of who we are, where we come from and the unstoppable power we built together.”

Utah began selling limited Utah mammoth merchandise (including T-shirts, hats and hoodies) in the Team Store at Delta Center on Wednesday. A press conference for NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is also planned for the arena.

The Mammoth jersey will be purchased later in the offseason. They will see them in the June NHL draft as Utah's choice will wear new sweaters. Utah won the second draft lottery drawing Monday night to get the fourth pick.

Utah will introduce Mammoth's mascot in home games next season, which will be revealed in the coming months.

The name accidentally leaked the team's official YouTube channel last week, inspired by the herd of Mammoth's cattle, claiming to make it a Utah home more than 10,000 years ago. Fossils were found throughout the state, and a complete mammoth bone was found in Huntington Canyon in 1988.

"There is evidence that the herd is charged at 25 miles per hour, comparable to the speed that the fastest skater in the NHL has achieved," the team said in the release.

According to the team, Utah chose a single “mammammy” instead of “mammammy” because “it symbolizes a team, an all-round and the entire Utah.”

The new team logo - the head of the mammoth head with curved ivory - provides fans with several Easter eggs.

The snow-capped Wasatch mountains form the top of the mammoth's head. The Utah silhouette and a negative space "M" are hidden to the left of the logo. The curved ivory is intended to evoke the letter "u" of the Utah state. "Tusks Up" is a rally cry that Mammoth fans recognized by the team.

Utah will wear the new Mammoth logo on the “home jersey” and the state’s name on the outer jersey and join the Carolina Hurricane to become the only team currently wearing the logo on one jersey, while the other is Wordmark. According to Utah, road jerseys continue to send messages from the team’s inaugural season, “when we leave the state, the focus is on representing Utah.”

Mammoths will be paired with Utah and hockey sticks on the shoulders of their home improvement jerseys, as well as patches with Mammoth’s splash logo.

The rebranding ended the process that began a year ago.

The team, known as the Utah Hockey Club in 2024-25, has little time to decide on a permanent nickname and logo. Design firm Doubleday & Cartwright developed the team's color scheme - Rock Black, Salt White and Mountain Blue - while under the official nickname of the franchise's second season.

SEG released a Qualtrics poll in May 2024, with 20 potential team names. This took another fan vote in the six finalists in June: Utah HC, Mammoth, Violator, Venom and Yeti.

During Utah’s inaugural season, even for players, the “Snowman” was widely regarded as the team’s ultimate name. But Utah announced in January that it would not use “Yeti” or “Yetis” as the nickname after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected the trademark application for “Utah Yeti” because the trademark application for “Yetis, Utah” is “a “confusing possibility” for consumers to consumers for other companies and brands that use the name. Among these parties are Snowman Cooler LLC, which makes drinks, coolers and clothes.

With the Snowman and Snowman elimination, the group announced in January that Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth and Utah Wasatch will be finalists for fans of the Delta Center. Fans voted through iPad votes for radio stations around the arena, which included the name, logo and potential brands for each option.

While Wasatch has never been part of a previous fan vote, the team has made it a new option. It references local mountains and will allow the team to use "mythical snow mountain creatures in the form of snowmen" as mascot. But when the team saw the early vote back, Wasage, Utah, was quickly replaced with Outlaws in Utah.

While the total number of votes has not been released yet, the team said the Mammoth was a "obvious favorite" in the final round of votes.

Utah said the names in the final voting panel clearly showed any trademark issues. The National Lacrosse League's neighboring Colorado Mammoth also has no problem. Utah has been having regular conversations with Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Lacrosse series, and has gained support for the new Utah team name, according to the team.

As for the “Utah Hockey Club,” the team said the name and brand will “always be part of our history” and can be respected in a nostalgic way for years to come.
