USMNT's Pochettino: Turner risk is replaced with first choice GK

Mauricio Pochettino, head coach of the U.S. men's national team, said he is willing to serve as another goalkeeper in the current game besides current Matt Turner before the 2026 World Cup.

Turner last played a fiercely competitive match in CONCACAF National League in March when he was fitting Canada in a 2-1 win over Canada in third place.

His last game at the club stadium Crystal Palace was in a 3-1 FA Cup victory over Millwall on March 1. He has not seen the field in a single league match this season and is an unused substitute in Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The United States had a friendship with Türkiye and Switzerland in early June, followed by the CONCACAF Golden Cup. Pochettino's team played against the Golden Cup stage in Trinidad and Tobago on June 15, before playing against Saudi Arabia four days later and played against Haiti on June 22.

The Golden Cup will be the last competitive match before the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the US co-hosted by Canada and Mexico.

Pochettino, who spoke to reporters on a Zoom call at CONCACAF GOLD CUP MEDIC, said he was aware of the situation and spoke to Turner.

"I think (Turner is) not playing the game, we're talking to him, and we translated the idea that in the future, over a year, I think he needs to find a way to compete every week," Pochettino said.

Otherwise, Turner might see himself falling behind his teammates, the American coach added.

“It’s open to our minds now, it’s open to another player’s challenge (goalkeeper) and maybe the possibility of trying to get (with) another player.”

But Pochettino is clear that he will wait to see his players close up before making any decisions.

"I think it's like I'm doing to me, it's about the way they're going to train, and we're evaluating a lot of players. I think we're going to have enough games to try to give possibilities to another Guardian, but that's not the decision today."

Pochettino was also asked about PSV guard Sergiño Dest, who recently brought it back to the scene after surgically repairing the ACL. DEST provides USMNT with an important creative outlet and is missed during the National League.

But Pochettino insists that he won't rush to bring DEST completely back and that he "has to make the best decisions for him not only today and his future and the future of the national team."

When it comes to preparations for the Golden Cup, Pochettino said that players with the upcoming friendly match will also be players playing in the Golden Cup.

“I think that’s going to be high with the situation we consider it, and will be playing in the first two friendly matches and then playing in the Golden Cup,” he said. “I think it’s a logical decision because I think if you want to prepare for the Golden Cup, I think you need players that are suitable for the game and training.”
