Ukrainian authorities said earlier Sunday that the largest Russian drone attack since the 2022 full-scale war began in 2022, killing a woman in the Kiev region and injuring at least three people.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched 273 drones before 8 a.m. local time, mainly targeting the central Kiev region, the dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions in the eastern part of the country.
Data provided by the Air Force shows that this is the largest drone attack from Russia's war on Ukraine. On February 23, on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow launched the 267 drones at that time.
The first direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on Friday failed to promote a temporary ceasefire, Kiev and its allies have been urging. A deal was reached in 100 minutes of talks in Istanbul to trade 1,000 prisoners of war with both sides.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday.
Ukrainian authorities said Russian drone attacks that continued overnight on Sunday killed a 28-year-old woman in the capital region, and at least three people were injured, including a 4-year-old child.
“Unfortunately, a woman died of injury due to an enemy attack in the Obkiv region,” Kiev Region Governor Mykola Kalashnik posted in the telegram.
Kiev and its surrounding areas and eastern Ukraine were cancelled at around 9 a.m. local time and were air strikes overnight for nine hours. The military said in a telegram that air defense forces tried several times to repel the attack.
"It's been a tough night. Russians have been using war and attacks to intimidate everyone in the negotiations," Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Resistance to False Information, said in a telegram about Sunday's attack.
Air defense forces destroyed 88 drones. The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement on the telegram that the attack also included 128 simulated drones that were lost on the way and lost anything.
On Saturday, a Russian drone attack killed nine civilians after hitting a shuttle in the Sumi area in northeastern Ukraine. Zelenskyy called the attack "intentional" and urged stronger sanctions on Moscow, which attacked military facilities.
Kalashnik said all those injured in the Obukhiv area south of Keefe were hospitalized. He added that several residential buildings in the area were damaged.
In the city of Kiev, debris from a destroyed drone damaged the roof of a non-residential building, the city's military authority said in a telegram. It added that there were no reports of injuries.
Reuters' Witnesses heard explosions in and around Kiev, sounding like air defense forces operating. Russia did not comment immediately.
