General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has reactivated his X account less than a week after quitting the social media platform, citing He refocused on military duties.
"I'm back!" General Kainerugaba posted on his verified account @mkainerugaba, which quickly amassed hundreds of followers.
He's back in characteristic style with a series of controversial posts threatening to "shock the world!"
The 50-year-old army general has increasingly stepped into the political arena, violating military protocol and reigniting debate over his ambition to succeed his father, who has been in power since 1986.
Critics have blasted the general for comments he made on social media that touched on topics taboo for active-duty soldiers.
He sparked outrage over a recent tweet in which he threatened to behead Bobi Wine, the country's leading opposition figure.
Announcing his return on Thursday on the Weibo platform, General Kenerugaba ordered Ugandan security agencies to immediately arrest any opposition figures found wearing uniforms similar to the country's military.
"Those who do not respect this order... have their own problems," the Ugandan army chief added.
He also threatened to expel an unnamed U.S. diplomat for reportedly failing to "pay tribute" to the general.
“My only problem is the American Attaché. If I find him anywhere…and he doesn’t stand up and salute me…I will arrest him on the spot!!
The general also wanted to know what the BBC "said to me", referring to the company's Reports that he announced his withdrawal from X last week.
This is the second time in three years that General Kenerugaba has quit and returned to the social media platform.
He first left in 2022 but returned days later and continued to speak on social media, previously sparking diplomatic tensions.
In October of that year, he made headlines for posting a series of tweets threatening to invade neighboring Kenya, comments that forced his father to step in and apologize.
General Kainerugaba’s recent posts threaten to “cut off” the head of Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi , a move that drew widespread condemnation in the country.
While the general apologized for the post, which he called a joke, Wine said he cannot take the threat lightly.
The Ugandan government played down the post, with a spokesman describing General Kenerugaba's social media statement as "casual" remarks that should not be interpreted as reflecting official policy.
General Kenerugaba is widely seen as the heir apparent to his father, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, although Museveni denies he is grooming him to become president.
His X account currently has over 1,000 followers. The old account had amassed over a million followers.
In his reply, he urged his supporters to follow him back.
"I want all my people back. Bring them all back!"
