Tyrod Taylor supports Justin Fields as a new starting point for the jet QB

NEW YORK - Aaron Rodgers will release Aaron Rodgers in March for three weeks offseason in the New York Jets - Tyrod Taylor is considered a backup plan for starting quarterback work.

Then there was the signing of Justin Fields, who was then called the starting quarterback by team officials.

Taylor's first comment since a quarterback big player introduced him, he went all out in an interview Tuesday night. Taylor won't say whether he hopes for a chance to compete for a starting job, it's an opportunity never before.

"Whether I do or not, how is my mentality and my condition ready for myself for a season, because my rookie year is already (every day approaching you as a starter," Taylor said. "As a quarterback, you are an opportunity, so you want to be fully prepared for this opportunity."

Taylor, who supported Rodgers last season, said he knew Fields were “very good” and added that they trained in Atlanta during the offseason.

“We’ve also been good friends throughout his entire league,” Taylor said. “So I’m here to support and help the team win in any form or fashion, whether it’s on the court or being able to throw away some light, experience and coaches, whether it’s in the quarterback room or anywhere else.

Fields, 26, is the Jets' No. 1 quarterback target among free agents. New York gave him a two-year, $40 million contract that included a $30 million guarantee.

If the Jets missed the field and got a cheaper quarterback, there's a good chance Taylor would have a chance to compete for a starting job. Once the jet invests a lot of money in the field, the plan becomes clear.

Taylor broke into the NFL in 2011 and his starting record was 28-28-1. Last season, he only played 36 snapshots in his motorcycle mission, completing 119 yards and 3 touchdowns in 22 passes without interceptions. Rodgers starts every game.

Taylor, 35, is a popular player, and the turnout on Tuesday night proved it. No less than 15 teammates, including most offensive wingers, appeared to support him. None of the players interviewed by ESPN took the risk of speculating on how Rodgers’ former teammates planned to handle his career.

“I’m not sure,” Taylor said. "I have nothing but love for Aaron. I learned a lot from him last year. There is nothing else but respect."
