Tyrique George: How teenagers break into Chelsea’s £1bn without loans

George was promoted from the academy team to the first team on December 19 after he and defender Josh Acheampong signed a new deal in June 2024.

The decision, which signed a three-year contract, combined with an optional fourth year, has attracted attention from multiple Chelsea’s academy sources.

The internal conversation is that he could lose £100 million of his talent from £100 million since he has owned ownership in 2022 - including another talented striker in the summer.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca gave George a chance in the preseason, with Italian support keeping him at Stamford Bridge.

George was originally played for TFA Totterridge FC by Chelsea at Whetstone.

He signed through their development center program and then became a fully-appeared academy player at the age of eight - posing with the then-first team breakthrough stars Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Lewis Baker on the signing day.

However, a source told BBC Sport that in the early days, George was a "middle" player of his age until he was around 10 years old.

At that time, George's father hired goalkeepers as well as personal coach David 'Guru' Sobers, who improved the game in Chelsea's job.

In the middle of the week, George will train with Chelsea and then starts at 13 on Friday, he will play against the men in nine games at Vauxhall or South London at the Elms Power League.

On Saturday, he will train again and have a post-match analysis in the Power League match the night before before returning to Chelsea on Sunday.

"I used to spend a few hours on public transport with Tyrique for two hours because I thought I could help him," Sobers told BBC Sport.

“We’re going to spend hours doing one-on-one, technical work, shooting training, and I love how he’s going to push himself so much. When he plays against an 18-year-old, I’m going to be a ‘bad’ referee, so he’s going to get kicked a lot – but have to get up and win the ball.

"We took the tactics at Friday meetings in these games. I think it helps our young players, we have a lot of people at Manchester City, West Ham and reading now, becoming fearless, especially when we get back to our age."

George also had a few years of unique FA training at Elite Academy, but in the condition that he would play with players older than him a few years ago.

Sobers still works with George, adding: “Ty is not satisfied with anything at all, but how ruthless he is in repetition and doing fundamentals.

“He kept pushing him, but he kept trying to work hard and we didn’t force him, that’s what he wanted to do when he was modest.

"He has shown that he has shown a mentality even when facing men as a kid in his age. The rapid growth of late growth is a missing part of the puzzle."
