Trump's Ethan Coen, Lesbian B movie, replayed with Joel

Ethan and the Joel Coen brothers have produced 18 movies together, starting in 1984 Simple blood By 2018 Buster Skruger's balladthe iconic movie that creates a masterpiece of black comedy.

Then, without warning or explanation, they split. Joel did it Macbeth's Tragedy (2021), a grim black and white Shakespeare adaptation that feels as far away as possible from the Coen Brothers movie. In contrast, Ethan's first solo project was Driving dollthe story of two lesbian friends (Geraldine Viswanathan and Margaret Qualley) is running from a sleepy thug after McGuffinian's trophy bag. The queer spin in the Coen-style criminal thriller comedy is largely derived from Coen's co-author Tricia Cooke, his longtime editor and 32-year-old wife. Cook is lesbian; the couple has an unconventional marriage, both of whom have separate partners outside of the marriage. Cohen and Cook followed Driving doll and Dear, don't! In Raymond Carver's noir, a nutty lesbian spins, Villey plays the town's Pi honey o'donahue, Aubrey Plaza, her Butch Buddy MG and Chris Evans are a super-lack missionary missionary.

Dear, don't! It will premiere worldwide in Cannes on Friday. Focus feature will bow in the United States on August 22. Filmmaker and Hollywood Reporter About their "Queer Big Stupid Movie" they hope to bring back punctuation (with Joel!) in the movie record and Ethan's next movie.

So, this is the second movie - what do you call it - your lesbian B movie trilogy?

Ethan Coen We call it accurate. Time will tell if I mean it is really through. We say trilogy because if you say you are doing two, but there is no clear plan to do one third. Whatever you want to call it.

Then call it Doology. What was the beginning of the entire project?

Tricia Cooke I have no idea. I think we both really like genre movies, B movies, and we live at some point in life, Ethan does a lot of work alone, so the way we spend time together is just writing. We wrote Driving dam (Also known as Driving doll) First, in the early 2000s, we wrote one, and we were like, "Okay, we should write another, but this should be a detective movie." We just went from there. It's just one way we spend time together. I certainly never thought that, except for us writing about them, the kids would find them one day, like, “Oh, that’s what mom and dad do in their spare time.”

Cohen I'll answer in a different way. I would say we see an underserved market. But no matter what, both are correct.

Do you mean "underserved market"?

Cohen Gay, lesbian genre movies. They are not a familiar thing, of course they are not. You know, lesbian detective movies. You can't see much.

Cook These types of B movies, they are straightforward, or mainly straight. So we thought: Let's turn them around a little bit. Because sometimes, there are a lot of queer cinemas, especially lesbian cinemas, which sometimes get a little heavy. We just wanted to do something fun and carefree and didn’t take ourselves too seriously.

Cohen There is also a chance to offend people. I'm Jewish, Joel and I have some Jewish characters in my movies that offend Jews. Trish is gay and it opens up a whole new avenue. We can offend gay people.

Cook He said, it's not me.

Like this movie Driving dollyou can see the echoes of early movies Simple blood and Raising Arizona. Tricia, where do you see fingerprints? What makes this different from the "Coen Brothers" movie?

Cook Well, this is a weird movie. I added gay. As a lesbian, I brought it into the writing process, which is an understanding of the world. exist Driving damthis lesbian bar world. In this movie, it's just the dynamic between honey and MG, which is a kind of fleshy female understanding of these characters. Whenever there is something sensitive, it is usually because I want to put it there.

Cohen Whenever something burrs is me.

This movie is entertainment, but is it just the fact that it is filming a queer movie? Are there different lands in the second Trump administration now?

Cook You know, I've considered it, I'm not sure. Since Trump’s election, our country has felt like a real cultural change. On one hand, this should be a big stupid movie, which is certainly suitable for Maga World. But it's a weird stupid movie, so there can be a challenge. Maybe that should be a record.

Cohen No, I like it. It is
Confusing. "Queer stupid movie" says.

Cook I mean, there are a lot of sex. About the role of the priest (played by Chris Evans) and the kind of cult world that exists there, a little like Trump, but not a lot, but not a lot.

Cohen I know why you are asking. This is an interesting question. I just don't think I know. At this point, people’s identities are so entrenched that no one will push it. But again, maybe it's easy for me to say it.

How does your own personal relationship fit into your work? You are in an unconventional marriage, one is straight and the other is queer, both with other partners. How do you think about your relationship shaping the work you do together?

Cohen I'll give you a very honest answer: I don't know. We are not really self-reflective people. I really don't know how our identities affect our work. Of course, it must be done, but we didn't think about it.

Cook Maybe it’s because we do have such an unconventional relationship, even in a queer world, right? So, laughing at a little bit of fun in a queer world, maybe it's me saying I'm an outsider in all these worlds - in a straightforward world in a queer world. This is just the essence of our relationship.

Regarding the fun of kidding, do you think these movies have brought new movies?

Cohen Well, like some of the Jewish characters I mentioned earlier that I have done in some cases, they don’t always have dignity. The annoying thing is that a few people must be the embodiment of kindness. That's a bad drama. This is a good movie on the contrary.

Cook We didn't put (our queer characters) on the pedestal. We just make them croak, dirty or bad like anyone.

Will there be a third movie in the trilogy?

Cook OK, we have a title: Go to the beaver!

Cohen There is a comma and exclamation mark. We like the titles with punctuation marks in it. Dear, don't! There is an exclamation mark. We did Hail, Caesar! With commas and exclamation marks. Oh, brother, where are you? There is a comma and a question mark. The title does not have enough punctuation marks. In my opinion, this is the main problem with movies today.

Cook We've written about a third of the books, but we're both doing other things. Ethan and Joel wrote a new movie together and I'm now writing with my daughter.

Ethan, are you going to make another movie with your brother?

Cohen Oh, yes. I think we will. We wrote something. My God, at least a year ago, we wrote something to do together. We have an old thing. Maybe we will write something new. But Joel is about to start something, so we are a little out of sync. But yes, the answer is yes. When this happens, we just need to sync again.

What are you most proud of for this movie?

Cohen Title sequence.

Cook This is what we say in the news. And then I reflected, I thought, you know, I'm proud of us being able to bring these gay characters into life. But in terms of its appearance
The title order is really interesting because we are very practical about it, it's a guerrilla filmmaking and the rest of the movie is not.

Cohen Not only is there Tricia, I haven't done it before, but I haven't done it with Joel before. This is very interesting. It's hard to describe, but it's fun to do it. I also want to add information about lesbian characters, which is for underserved audiences. Yes, but at the same time, not just for that market. Whether you are a woman or not, the sex scenes are hot.

Cook There are many different types of sex scenes, not just between two title characters. There is a lot of sex in it.

Cohen And don't spoil anything, but straightforward sex is ridiculous.
