Trump suddenly fires Congressional librarian in the latest administration clearance | U.S. News

Donald Trump suddenly fired Librarian Carla Hayden, a Librarian of Congress on Thursday as the White House continues to clear the federal government against the Republican U.S. president and his agenda.

According to an email received by the Associated Press, the White House President’s Office of Personnel notified Hayden in an email late Thursday. Hayden confirmed the job in the 2016 Senate as the first woman to become a librarian in Congress and the first African-American.

"Kara," the email began. "On behalf of President Donald J Trump, I write to you that your position as a librarian of Congress was immediately terminated. Thank you for your service," a spokesman for the Library of Congress confirmed that the White House told Hayden that she was fired.

Hayden, who will expire next year’s 10-year term, experienced political opposition from a conservative advocacy group that vowed to take root in those who believe are represented by Trump’s right-wing agenda. The group, the American Accountability Foundation, accused Hayden and other library leaders of promoting children's books on "radical" content and literary materials written by Trump opponents.

"The current #LibrarianOfcranefcres Carla Hayden has been awakened to anti-Trump and promote trans children," AAF said on its X account earlier Thursday. "It's time for her to go out and hire a new guy to work!"

Trump has been eliminating officials, and he believes the agenda from the Justice Department to the Pentagon and beyond is inconsistent. Sometimes the shooting comes after the conservative voices will be criticized by officials.

Earlier Thursday, the Federal Emergency Administration (FEMA) acting administrator was pushed out a day after testifying that he disagreed with the proposal to demolish the group. Trump suggests that individual countries, not FEMA, should lead the response to hurricanes, tornadoes and other such crises.

In the Pentagon, more than six senior officials have been fired since January, including Joint Chiefs of Staff CQ Brown Jr.

The unexpected move against Hayden on Thursday angered Congressional Democrats, who initially revealed their firing.

"Enough," said Chuck Schumer, a Senate Democratic leader in New York, who called Hayden "a pioneer, a scholar, and a civil servant in the highest order."

Rosa Delauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said Hayden was “bored” by Trump and asked the administration to explain why she was fired.

"Hayden has served people throughout his career - from helping children learn to read to protecting the most precious treasure of our country," said New York Congressman Joseph Morelle. "She is an American hero."

The Library of Congress, across from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., has a large amount of books and history and provides the public and lawmakers with books and history in the country. It has papers by nearly twenty presidents and more than thirty Supreme Court justices.

It also contains a collection of rare books, images and music and artifacts, just like the flute owned by President James Madison, the singer Lizzo played at Hayden's 2022 performance.

Democratic leaders praised Hayden as a long-time leader in the Baltimore library system, whose tenure modernized the library and made it easier to access.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in New York praised Hayden as “an accomplished, principled and outstanding library director.”

"The unfair decision of Donald Trump to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hacker is the latest in his ongoing efforts to ban books, paint American history and reject the clock," Jeffries said.

"The Library of Congress is the Library of People. An unprecedented attack on the American way of life will quickly and not later on accountability for the United States."

Principal Deputy Librarian Robert Newlen said he will be acting as a Congressional librarian in another email seen by the Associated Press “until further guidance”.

Hayden recently talked about how the library changed her life and opened her up. She posted on X during National Library Week last month: “Libraries are huge equalizers.”

"When you have a free public library in particular, it's "a center of opportunity for people from all walks of life and you're giving them the opportunity to choose the greatest meaning of information, entertainment and inspiration to them," she said.
