WASHINGTON - Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Moscow will retaliate against major drone attacks in Ukraine over the weekend, which has led to doubt that a peace deal to end the war may soon emerge, President Donald Trump said Wednesday.
Trump said in a post about the Truth Society that he spoke to Putin for about an hour and 15 minutes and conveyed that this would not lead to "immediate" peace between Russia and Ukraine.
"We discussed Ukraine's attack on Russian docked aircraft, and various other attacks on both sides. It was a good conversation, but not a good conversation, which would lead to immediate peace. President Putin did say, very strongly, that he would have to attack Ukrain on the recent attack, which was an attack on the Ukrainians.
Trump said they also discussed negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. "President Putin suggested that he would have a discussion with Iran, and maybe he might help to come up with that," he said. "I think Iran has been slowly moving around their decision on this very important thing and we will need a definite answer in a very short time!"
Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters in a telephone briefing that the Russian president accused Ukraine of trying to thwart peace talks. Usakov also said Trump told Putin that the United States was not aware of it before Ukraine's huge drone attack on Sunday.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A delegation of Ukrainian officials met this week with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as Trump's national security adviser and Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that negotiators from Ukraine and Russia held a peace negotiation meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday, during which they discussed exchanges between prisoners of war. Zelenskyy said Russia gave Ukraine a "last pass" rather than a memorandum of the ceasefire agreement. He also said he was ready to meet with Putin and Turkish President Riko Erdogan in the coming days.
Despite negotiations on ending the war that began in 2022, the conflict continues. In addition to the weekend's massive drone attack on Ukraine against Russia, Ukraine also attacked major Russian bridges, including key bridges connecting Russia to Crimean territory.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to strike against civilians in Ukraine. In the last 24 hours of Ukraine, four civilians were killed and more than a dozen were injured due to a Russian strike.
In recent months, Trump has expressed public frustration with the Russian leader, who has long boasted about building friendly relations. Trump said last week that the United States will know within two weeks whether Putin takes the Ukrainian war seriously.
