Donald Trump says he will reverse Joe Biden's plan to phase out plastic straws throughout the U.S. government, complaining that paper alternatives don't work and action is needed to "get back to plastics ! ”
Trump said in a truth society post that he will sign an executive order next week “end the ridiculous Biden of paper straw, which doesn’t work. Back to Plastics!” the U.S. president in another post Added that Biden's "paper straw" "authorization" is now dead. "Enjoy the next drink without straw dissipating in your mouth!!!"
Trump appears to be working hard, with the Biden administration planning to unveil last year, gradually phase out all-available plastics from the federal government by 2035. At the time, the White House said this was the first time to “formally recognize the severity of the plastic pollution crisis and the scale of effective face-to-face response.”
Biden attempts to reduce discarded plastics, such as straw and sachets from the U.S. government, one of the world's largest single-commodity consumers, aims to cope with the growing wave of plastic pollution. Other countries have imposed bans – the EU bans single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery and straw and will further expand them to plastic bags, toiletries and other items by 2030.
But Trump enjoys drinking dietary coke so much that he has installed a button in the Oval Office to summon staff to serve drinks, and has long opposed any restrictions on plastic straws.
When trying to re-election in 2020, his campaign sold reusable straws on its website, claiming that “free paper straw does not work.” After returning to the White House in January, Trump revoked Biden's orders on his first day as president, gradually phased out single-use plastic on federal land, including U.S. National Parks, by 2032.
Despite growing awareness of the damage caused by waste, the world was experiencing new plastic production last year, and the summit between last year failed to reach a deal to resolve the issue. Global annual plastic production has doubled in the two decades since 2000 to about 460 million tons, and is expected to quadruple again by 2050.
Now, less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled. According to experts' estimates, the rest always ends up in the environment, the equivalent of a truck loading with plastic dumping its contents into the ocean every minute. Most of this waste is made up of singular plastics, such as straw, which accounts for about 40% of plastic production.
The result of this prosperity is a world full of plastic, even in the air, where large or microscopic fragments of material are found in every corner of the earth. Plastic chokes and throttles were found in animals including humans, marine life and birds and microplastics. Research has found that plastic exists in the human brain, testicles, blood and even the placenta.

Plastics are the product of fossil fuels, and increased production will also increase the Earth's heating emissions that lead to the climate crisis. An analysis last year found that by the middle of this century, plastic production could generate global emissions of three times, accounting for one-fifth of the planet's remaining carbon budget.
Green groups say Trump’s embrace of plastic will only exacerbate this environmental crisis. “Instead of doing what is necessary to protect Americans’ health, communities and coasts from widespread plastic pollution, it’s better to announce the order rather than find a solution,” said Christy Leavitt, campaign director for Oceana Plastics.
“President Trump should address the global leader in the United States by reducing the production and use of single-use plastics and promoting reuse and supplementation systems.”
