President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that he would meet with representatives of the U.S. film industry to discuss his plans to impose 100% tariffs on foreign-made films.
"I don't want to hurt the industry; I want to help the industry," he said.
"We're going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they're happy with it because we're all about work," CNBC said.
On Sunday night, Trump made a bold statement on the Truth Society, suggesting plans to impose 100% tariffs on films made outside the United States, with no indication whether it also applies to films made by TV or international producers.
"Hollywood isn't doing a lot of things. They have a good signal, everything is good, but they don't do much," Trump told reporters on Monday.
Earlier Monday, the White House said there was no final decision on the tariffs, but “explores all options.”
"While no final decision on foreign film tariffs has been made, the administration is exploring all options to achieve President Trump's directives to protect our country's national and economic security while making Hollywood great again," White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement.
Also on Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement saying: “Governor’s News Service continues to advocate for California’s iconic film and television industry – recognizing that it is the cornerstone of the state’s economy, which is based on maintaining hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs across the state and supporting globally in various programs across the state in entertainment.
"If the president announces the proposal provides more details, we will review it," the Newsom statement concluded.
Meanwhile, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland of SAG-AFTRA also issued a statement: “SAG-AFTRA supports efforts to increase production of film, television and streaming in the United States. We will continue to advocate for policies to strengthen our competitive position, accelerate our economic growth and create good middle-class jobs for American workers.
“We look forward to learning more about the details of the president’s announcement and having a conversation to achieve our shared goals.”
