Their office said Tuesday that President Donald Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and top trade official Jamieson Greer will meet with their Chinese counterparts in Switzerland this week.
The announcement marks an important step towards the start of negotiations in the ongoing trade war to begin negotiations in Washington and Beijing.
Their office said in a separate press release that both Bessent and Greer will meet with Swiss President Karin Ketter-Sutter during their visit.
"During Switzerland, Minister Best will also meet with leading representatives on economic matters in the People's Republic of China," a statement from the U.S. Treasury said.
His office said Greer “will also meet with his peers from the People’s Republic of China to discuss trade matters.”
Trump said earlier on Tuesday that China wants to have a meeting and that the United States will do so at the "right time."
"They want to negotiate and want to have a meeting and we will meet them at the right time," Trump said at the White House meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

WASHINGTON - On May 8, Finance Minister Scott KH Bessent will travel to Switzerland.
“Economic security is national security, and President Donald J. Trump leads a stronger and more prosperous America at home and abroad,” the secretary said. “I look forward to productive negotiations as we work to improve the international economic system to better serve the interests of the United States.”
During his visit to Switzerland, Secretary Bessent will meet with Swiss President Karin Ketter-Sutter, during which the secretary will follow up on their recent meeting at the recent World Bank Group (WBG)-International Monetary Foundation (IMF) spring meeting.
While in Switzerland, Secretary Bessent will also meet with leading representatives on economic matters of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Ambassador Jamieson Greer travels to Switzerland

Washington - U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to Geneva, Switzerland later this week. Ambassador Greer will meet with the World Trade Organization (WTO) with USTR staff on the USTR mission. He will also meet with Switzerland's President Karin Ketter-Sutter to discuss negotiations on mutual trade.
“In the direction of President Trump, I am negotiating with the country to rebalance our trade relations to achieve reciprocity, open up new markets and protect the U.S. economy and national security,” Ambassador Greer said. “I look forward to having productive meetings with some of my peers and visiting with my team in Geneva, who are all working to promote our interest in a range of multilateral issues.”
While in Switzerland, Ambassador Greer will also meet with his peers from the People's Republic of China to discuss trade matters.
