President Trump said he had a $20 billion lawsuit against Paramount Global and CBS alleged that “60 Minutes” interviewed then-VP Kamala Harris, “a real winner.” He claimed that Paramount, CBS and "60 Minutes" admitted "to the crime" that in fact Paramount and CBS thought they did nothing wrong in this matter - and called Trump's lawsuit "an insult to the First Amendment."
The president's lawyers and Paramount's global legal team are said to have begun mediation Wednesday to identify potential solutions to the lawsuit, with Trump's comments posted. Paramount’s board of directors outlined “acceptable financial terms for potential settlement with the president” at its April 18 meeting, according to a report from the New York Times.
Trump wrote on Wednesday morning's Truth Social, his social media platform: "CBS and Paramount are the real winners of the 60-minute case. Kamala Harris asked a question before Election Day during the early voting period and gave an answer, which was so bad and incompetent that she ended up with many of her votes, and it was a disastrous answer! 60 minutes was a disastrous answer! 60 minutes and its corporate parents had no negative impact on her answer. For a completely different question.
Trump suggested in his post that the New York Times reported: "Legal experts say the lawsuit is unfounded and that it is easy to win against CBS" may be "possible" and "possibly responsible for infringement interventions, including elections where we focus on."
"Despite all of the above, as well as Paramount/CBS admission fees for the crime, and the New York Times failed because of other similar corruption, which was written and polled false news, claiming that "people" said the case was unfounded," the president wrote. "They are not saying that they just had an incurable case of Trump's dangerous syndrome, which could be the insertion of the times put them accountable for infringement interventions, including elections where we concentrate on studying."
Trump asserted by asserting: "The most important thing is that 60 Minutes and its company owners are committed to one of the most shocking illegal violations in broadcast history. There is no illegal creation of illegal creation for presidential candidates, and has done a certain price before, they must pay a certain price for it, and should pay any possible for their own possibilities and acts of nothing.
The highest global representative declined to comment.
Trump sued CBS days before the November 2024 presidential election, accusing CBS News of its "60 Minutes" report that violated Texas' consumer protection laws, deceptively editing the interview with Harris. Earlier this year, the president expanded the lawsuit, alleging additional claims under the Federal Langham Act and seeking at least $20 billion in damages.
In March, Paramount filed a lawsuit to dismiss Trump, filing two motions to dismiss the case (one for lack of jurisdiction and the other for reasons that the Consumer Fraud Act does not manage editorial speeches). “If the First Amendment means what it means, it means that public officials like the plaintiff cannot make news organizations like CBS responsible for simply exercising editorial judgments,” Paramount motion said. “Whether the plaintiffs believe that the entire unedited interview should be broadcast or edited only in their approval, they have no right to ask for news that only fits their wishes under the First Amendment.”
