Trump confirms "comprehensive and comprehensive" trade deal between Britain and the United States

Donald Trump announced a trade agreement between the UK and the United States, calling it a "complete and comprehensive agreement."

He wrote on social media website truth social:

The agreement with the UK is a complete and comprehensive agreement that will strengthen the relationship between the United States and the UK for many years to come.

Due to our long history and loyalty, it is a great honor to be able to make Britain our first announcement.

Many other transactions are in serious negotiation stages and must be followed!

A team of senior British trade negotiators landed in Washington on Wednesday as negotiations on a deal between the two countries reached a pace.

Officials in the UK business and trade sectors have tried to sign the agreement at the UK EU summit on May 19.

British officials have previously said they targeted tariff relief in narrow sectors to formally negotiate a separate European agreement before formal negotiations with the EU.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ruled down lowering food production standards to allow more U.S. agricultural products to trade, as officials prioritize signing separate agreements with the EU, which is likely to align UK standards with European standards.

The Trump administration imposed bruised tariffs on multiple trading partners on April 2 - the president called "Liberation Day" and then partially reversed the course after a sharp decline in U.S. equity and later bond markets.

The UK was not hit by reciprocal tariffs because the U.S. had a trade surplus and sold more sales in the UK than purchased. But, like other countries, the UK is affected by 10% global tariffs and 25% tariffs on foreign steel, aluminum and automobiles.

Trump is expected to announce British trade agreement framework

Good morning, welcome to the American Political Scene blog. I'm Tom Ambrose and over the next few hours I'll bring you all the latest news lines.

Donald Trump is expected to announce a framework for a trade deal with the UK and tease him for a "big and respected country," according to two people familiar with the matter.

The details of any agreement have not been immediately clear, whether the White House or the British Embassy in Washington has not reached an actual deal, or whether the framework requires further negotiations. Any agreement will mark the government's first deal as it imposed a large amount of tariffs on trading partners last month.

In an article on the truth social preview of the announcement, Trump was vague and did not disclose the country or terms.

"Tomorrow at 10:00 am, 10:00 am, the Oval Office has reached a major trade agreement with representatives of a large and respected country. The first of many countries!!!" Trump wrote in a post about the Truth Society.

What exactly is uncertainty Trump announced in the Oval Office, scheduled to be 10 a.m. Eastern Time (3 p.m. BST), which requires Congressional approval, given that the president has no unilateral authority to sign a trade agreement.

The man said the U.S. has been in talks with the UK for weeks as both sides try to quickly reach a deal to discuss reducing UK tariffs on U.S. cars and agricultural products and lower UK taxes on U.S. technology companies.

Timothy Brightbill, an international trade lawyer for Wiley Rein, told The New York Times that the announcement could be just “a deal to begin negotiations that determines the framework for issues that will be discussed in the coming months.”
