One of Donald Trump's 2024 victory claimed he made an undisclosed visit to Australia, giving the Liberal Party advice on "structural issues" related to Peter Dutton before the federal election.
Senior Republican strategist Chris Lacivita told undercover journalists they were looking to serve as potential clients in political consulting, and he has been visiting Australia instead of formal identity or adviser to the U.S. president.
The European-based organization CROCKIV and the Climate Reporting Center released videos of the undercover conversation on Thursday.
"Two weeks ago, I helped the Liberal Party there in Australia two weeks ago," Lacivita said on the first of two calls on April 16. The election campaign in Australia began on March 28.
“It seems like something is moving in the right direction…these efforts are inherently strict political and do not require me to interact with the U.S. government.”
Lacivita told the undercover reporters on his second call on April 24 that he had no publicity. He reported to the media about his paid work with the Albanian opposition party.
"I never know I'm there," he said. "I'm trying to maintain a certain degree of discretion … it gives us a certain degree of freedom of movement."
A league spokesman denied that Lakvita had any connection with the Dutton movement.
"Mr. Lacivita does not recommend, never suggest, nor does it participate in the league campaign in any way. Mr. Dutton has not met him yet."
Lacivita told Australia in a statement: "I don't work in the Liberal Party in Australia. I advise on all kinds of business interests - some people in Australia are in the United States and other aspects - I don't.
"And, I've never met Mr. Dutton, but I want him to be elected Prime Minister."
Lacivita, along with current White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, was Trump’s co-running manager in his successful 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump thanked Lacivita for his victory speech, who briefly used the microphone to thank the president, calling Trump a “hell for candidates, who will be the 47th president.”
Access and knowledge sharing between like-minded parties and advisors is not uncommon during the campaign.
Anthony Albanese has previously spoken with the British Labor Force (UK). ALP's campaign boss Paul Erickson advises strategists ahead of the 2024 election in the UK. Later, Erickson was invited to the Labor Party’s annual gathering.
Lacivita, a U.S. Navy veteran who won the Purple Heart in the First Gulf War, provided the truth campaign to the notorious Swift ship veteran, believes Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry dealt a fatal blow in his 2004 match against George W. Bush.
Dutton has distanced himself from associations with Trump during the campaign after initially pursuing policies that nodded to parts of the US president's agenda – promising to sack 41,000 public servants, announcing a role for senator Jacinta Nampinjinpa Price in pursuing “government efficiency”, claiming students were being “indoctrinated” by the school curriculum and denouncing the ABC and Guardian Australia as “hate media”.
During the second leader debate on the campaign, Dutton said: "We trust the United States. I don't know the president. I haven't seen him."
Labor has tried to connect Dutton to Trump-style politics as the vote shows voters becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the actions of the U.S. president, especially after the imposition of trade tariffs. Treasurer Jim Chalmers labeled opposition leader Dogey Dutton as "Dogey Dutton", referring to the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) established by Trump under Elon Musk.
Labor will likely point to claims about Lacivita's visit, as Dutton's agenda is guided by unpopular Trump, but it also suggests the link between the coalition and key members of the president's internal circles, which could be favorable if Dutton wins Saturday's election.
Lacivita is very qualified in Trump's track. Donald Trump Jr.
Trump Jr.’s novel says: “He doesn’t care about gaining credibility, he doesn’t care about touching his own self, he only cares about getting the job done and delivering goods to my dad.”
