President Donald Trump signs executive order to stop funding for NPR and PBS on Thursday
The order cites media’s “biased” and “partisan” news reports as reasons for the decision
Both NPR and PB have made statements saying they intend to challenge the order
President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the company to stop funding in the media, and the federal government's funding for the National Public Radio and Public Radio Service was stopped on Thursday.
The order said the decision was made because both NPR and PBS released "biased" and "Partisan" news.
Don't miss:
“When the CPB was established in 1967, the media landscape is now full of rich, diverse and innovative news options,” the order reads. “Americans have the right to expect that if their taxes fully fund public broadcasts, they only fund fair, accurate, impartial and nonpartisan news coverage…no entity provides tax-paying citizens with fair, accurate, or impartial descriptions of current affairs.”
Another statement issued by the White House said that NPR and PBS are “entities that receive tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds each year to spread radical, awakening propaganda disguised as “news.”
The statement cites examples of stories that the Trump administration believes are “trash for 'news'” or intolerant “non-left perspectives”, including a “Sesame Street” section that addresses the problem of racism in the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as several NPR stories that refute the theory of COVID-9, which originated in the lab.

Previously, public broadcasters received $1 billion in public funds annually through CPB, according to CNBC.
Both PBS and NPR responded to the executive order on Friday.
"The blatantly illegal executive order issued by the President in the late night threatens our ability to serve the U.S. public in the past 50 years of education programs. We are currently exploring all options to explore all options to allow PBS to continue serving our membership site and all Americans."

"We will vigorously defend our right to provide essential news, information and life-saving services to the American public. We will use all available means to challenge this executive order."
CBP President and CEO Patricia Harrison also issued a statement Friday, with similar views to NPR and PBS. It reads: “The CPB is not a federal executive body authorized by the President. The CPB directly authorized and funded by Congress is a private nonprofit company that is completely independent of the federal government.” “In the creation of the CPB, Congress explicitly prohibits the United States, agencies, officials or employees from exercising any guidance, supervision or control (CPB) or any of its grantees or contractors.”
Executive orders can be challenged in court.
