The incoming Trump administration plans to arrest illegal immigrants across the country from day one, and top officials say they are ready to "loosen" the handcuffs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Wall Street Journal reports that the government plans to conduct large-scale raids in Chicago on Tuesday, specifically targeting those with criminal backgrounds.
Fox News' Jesse Waters asked incoming border czar Tom Homan about media coverage of Tuesday's "massive raid" in Chicago, but Homan said ICE will be working across the country.
Democratic senators asked how Noem would work with Homan: "Who's in charge?"
"There's going to be a massive raid across the country. Chicago is just one of many locations. We have 24 field offices across the country. On Tuesday, ICE is finally going to go out and do their job. We're going to lift ICE's Handcuffs and let them arrest criminal aliens, that's what's going to happen," he said.
"We told ICE you will enforce immigration laws without apology. You will focus on the most serious issues first, on public safety threats first, but no one will be left out if they are in the country illegally and they have a problem ," he said.
The government has pledged to carry out mass deportations and tighten border security. Officials said they intend to target those with criminal histories and convictions, but also stressed they may arrest anyone who is in the U.S. illegally. Currently, there are more than 7 million people on ICE's undetained list.
Trump Homeland Security pick Noem promises to end controversial app used by immigrants on 'Day One'
"The administration has made it clear that we're going to start making arrests on day one, and Chicago likely won't be the only place where arrests are made," a person familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital.
The administration is expected to face fierce resistance from "sanctuary" cities that refuse to allow state and local law enforcement to respect ICE detainees, requiring that ICE be notified when detained illegal immigrants are released.
Some Democratic officials in Chicago, Massachusetts and Arizona said they would not cooperate with the administration.
