Trump administration enforces English requirements for truck drivers

The Trump administration took steps on Tuesday to start enforcing a law requiring truckers to speak English.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was in Austin, Texas, where he signed an order to direct the Transportation Department to enforce the law.

Duffy has identified this move as a safety issue on American roads.

"Misleading policies have long prioritized the political correctness of the security of the American people," Duffy said.

Under federal law, drivers must “read and speak English enough to speak with the public, learn about road traffic signs and signals in English in order to respond to official inquiries and report on reports and records.”

The move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 28 to direct the Department of Transport to provide UK literacy tests for our truck drivers.

"You may not know, but there are a lot of communication issues with truck drivers between federal officials and local officials, which is obviously a public safety risk," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at the time. "So, we will make sure that truckers at the backbone of our economy can speak English. It's a very common sense policy."

Duffy said that before 2015, more than 99,000 drivers violated their English proficiency and a thousand were cancelled.

Many of these drivers were awarded “a slap on the wrist,” he said.

"English is the language of American opportunity," the secretary said. "A driver who cannot read stop signs or understand police instructions allows drivers to operate a large 80,000-pound rig, threatening the safety of every American on our roads."

Go forward and if the truck driver is pulled over and finds he cannot speak English, they will be cancelled.
