Tory Lanez was hospitalized Monday after being stabbed in a California prison where he served for 10 years after shooting musician Megan Thee stallion.
According to the legal name of the Canadian rapper, Daystar Peterson, he was allegedly attacked by another inmate at the housing department of the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi at about 7:20 a.m. local time. The CDCR said the suspicious attacker was identified as Santino Casio and had been placed in restricted housing before the investigation.
That night, a message posted to Lannis' official Instagram account saying he had been stabbed 14 times, "had seven wounds on his back, four wounds on the back of his head, and one on the left side of his face." It said his lungs were broken, but his condition was improving.
“He is breathing now,” it read. “Despite his pain, he speaks normally, is refreshed and deeply thanks to the God he is mastering.”
Details about the attack remain small. CDCR officials said the jail's investigation department and the Kern County District Attorney's Office are investigating. NPR has contacted the DA's office for more information.
Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2023, a split and high-level drama trial, ending with his conviction on three felony charges: attacking a semi-automatic gun, possessing a hidden, unregistered firearm, and neglecting to shoot.
The allegations stemmed from an early morning event in July 2020, when Lanez and Megan Thee stallions left the pool party in Los Angeles. The legal name of the stallion is Megan Pete, who accused Lanez of shooting her two feet when she took off her vehicle after an argument.
The stallion said a few days later, in Instagram posts since, she suffered a gunshot wound that night, but was not discovered until next month that Lannis was the perpetrator. Lanez pleaded not guilty at trial - then released an album with one of the lyrics that kept his innocence and doubted the studies of the stud claim.
That October, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Lanez with a felony assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and the judge issued a protection order to keep him at least 100 yards away from the stallion. The second summer, he violated the order.
The rapper continues to be dispatched in public, referring to events in the lyrics. Meanwhile, media figures, other high-profile rappers and fans of both artists were suspicious of each other’s activities, and many carefully examined and blamed the stallion.
Lanez's December 2022 trial divides the hip-hop community and the internet, raising wider issues such as the abuse of black women in the industry and the criminal justice system. The stallion testified during the trial that the shooting and the subsequent rebound - hurt her physical and mental health, which she feared would also harm her career.
"I can't talk to people for a long time. I don't feel like I want to be on Earth," she said. "If I knew I had to go through this torture, I hope he would shoot me."
Lanez appealed his verdict, but was denied at the same time.
Stallion claims that Lannis had harassed her through surrogacy, resulting in an extension of the restriction order against him.
In a petition filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court in December, her legal team wrote that he "continues to suffer repeated trauma and victimization."
“Even now, Mr. Peterson shows no sign of stopping,” the petition obtained by the AP said.
It reported that the petition said Lannis' prison records show he was using a third party, including a specific blogger, to harass the stallion online, such as losing guns and bullets in the case.
Lannis' attorney wrote in court documents that the two had no direct contact, saying his client's imprisonment meant "no more stallions of any kind."
The judge approved a stallion in January to restrict the studs by 2030.
