Topo Chico recalls Costco and other retailers due to possible pollution

Concerns that some Topo Chico bottles may not only contain minerals, but also prompt Coca-Cola to issue a recall after bacteria are found, which could pose a health risk to people with weakened immune systems.

Coca-Cola issued a preliminary recall notice to Costco members on Monday, warning that the selected Topo Chico mineral water could be contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It said in the letter that the cases were sold at warehouses in Louisiana and Texas.

A letter to Costco members who purchased the product stated that the bacteria poses a "very low" health risk to the public. However, those with compromised immune systems that consume affected products may suffer potentially smaller health consequences.

A Coca-Cola spokesperson told Today.com in an emailed statement that the affected Topo Chico bottles are no longer available for sale and have been removed from store shelves. However, the statement made it clear that retail locations in five states were affected.

"The quality and safety of our products are our top priority," the statement said. "We voluntarily recalled a limited number of Topo Chico mineral water 16.9-ounce glass bottle products due to potential contamination of Pseudomonas. All affected products have been removed from store shelves at approximately 40 retail locations in Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas and Texas."
