Tom Cruise may have never been a part of "Rain Man" if it weren't for his sister.
During an extensive conversation at London's BFI on Sunday, Cruise reflects on the film's career and tells the story of his meeting with Dustin Hoffman at a New York City restaurant. It was 1984, when Cruise had just shot Ridley Scott's "Legend". He returned to the United States to visit his sister Cass, who found Hoffman from across from the restaurant.
"She's gone, 'there's Dustin Hoffman.' I looked up, and there, he was wearing a hat - he was doing "the death of a salesman" - he was ordering takeaway." "She's gone, 'You go there and say hello to him.' I was like, "I won't say hello." "She said: "You know him, you know his movies." "She didn't do that, and I didn't go to people, but she was so picky."
Eventually, Cruise said his sister - the audience's sister in the BFI speech gave him the final tign: "If you don't do that, I'll just go there and tell him who you are." Cruise replied: "He won't know who I am, that's really a shame!" Cruise recalled that Cas eventually "troubled me so much," he succumbed.
Hoffman eventually offered Cruise and his sister tickets to “The Death of the Salesman” and invited them backstage after the show. “When I left, he said, ‘I want to make a movie with you.’ I said, “Sir, sir,” Cruise said with a smile. “That’s what happened, basically a year later, he sent out the Rain Man. '"
"Rain Man," after Barry Levinson's road comedy, a Wheeler trader (Cruise), whose father left his fortune to another brother he didn't know (Hoffman), also won Best Picture at the Oscars, along with Hoffman actor Levinson, best director of Hoffman, Hoffman and the original script.
Cruise received a BFI scholarship in London, the organization's highest honor, and will be introduced at a BFI president's dinner on Monday. Cruise has spent a lot of time in the UK recently and filmed the upcoming film of Alejandro G.Iñárritu untitled, as well as a new section of the nation's "Mission: Impossime" franchise, "The Final Estimate". After receiving a BFI scholarship, Cruise will head to the Cannes Film Festival to premiere on Wednesday's "Final Estimation."
