NASHVILLE, Tenn. — When asked about the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, new Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi left all the options open.
Borgonzi has been the Titans' general manager for only a few days, but he's already received congratulatory messages from colleagues across the league and wishes to "stay in touch" about the No. 1 pick.
Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker's "Draft, Develop, Retain" mission revolves around accumulating picks and building rosters through the draft. Borgonzi shares the same vision and isn't closing the door on trade possibilities when the draft comes around.
"Draft picks are our largest form of currency, so when there's an opportunity to trade to collect more picks, we'll do it," Borgonzi said during his introductory press conference Wednesday.
Brink hopes to add a playmaker at the primary position through the draft, but Tennessee only has two picks in the top 100 this year (Nos. 1 and 35). Trading back from the No. 1 pick could add to their total.
"We hope to have 30 draft picks in the next three years," Brink said. "We hope 12 of them will be in the top 100."
With Will Levis the only quarterback under contract, the Titans don't have a proven option on the roster to be their franchise cornerstone. A downgrade trade could cost the Titans the chance to draft one of the two best quarterbacks this year.
Coming from the Kansas City Chiefs, Borgonzi understands how taking a quarterback in the draft can elevate a team to elite status in the league. That's what trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes with the 10th pick in the 2017 draft did for Kansas City.
"Quarterback is arguably the most important position in sports," Borgonzi said. "So you've got to solidify the quarterback position. We're going to attack that relentlessly until we find the answer."
Borgonzi said the Chiefs recognized Mahomes' rare skill set early in the process and received further support through meetings at the NFL Scouting Combine and team visits.
Next week, Borgonzi will travel to the East-West Shrine Bowl and Senior Bowl with Brink, coach Brian Callahan and the rest of the staff, which will provide Borgonzi an earlier opportunity to see it up close. Some of the top prospects this year.
With a new stadium set to be built in 2027, the Titans need to find a quarterback soon. The Titans believe Borgonzi can get them on track after going 3-14 on the season. Borgonzi said he has complete authority over free agency and the draft process, but Brinker has the tiebreaker.
"We're all working together to solve this problem," Brinker said. "Mike was hired to build this roster and he will take every opportunity to build this roster."
