Bob Dylan TikToked on Heaven's Gate after signing up for the social media app - days before it could disappear from his native United States.
The 83-year-old songwriter set up an official account, launching a 50-second video montage set to a soundtrack of "Like a Rolling Stone," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Hurricane." The post has attracted nearly 2 million views.
This was followed by a second post, a seemingly scathing clip of Dylan at a 1960s press conference, saying: "Oh my god, I have to leave right now."
Dylan's embrace of TikTok comes shortly before the platform is set to be banned in the United States under a law that requires the app's Chinese parent company to sell its U.S. operations by a Sunday deadline.
On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, although President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering ways to suspend the ban.
Since setting up the account on Tuesday, Dylan has gained 42,000 followers. He also has accounts on Instagram and X, with 1 million and 485,000 followers respectively.
Users commented that Dylan's appearance may have been a last-ditch effort - at least for his American audience - with one writing: "In true Bob style, showing up at the last minute."
The songwriter appeared on TikTok following a surge in media and audience interest in his work following the release of the film biopic "A Complete Unknown," starring Timothée Chalamet.
Billboard reports that Dylan's songs have seen an increase in plays since the film was released in U.S. theaters, with U.S. plays of his past songs increasing from 8 million a week in early December to 20 million a month later , more than doubled.
Listening to "Like a Rolling Stone" jumped 232% during the period, according to music data company Luminate, with "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" also seeing significant increases.
Dylan has also been posting more frequently on X, most recently praising Australian Nick Cave's new song "Joy" after watching him perform with Bad Seeds in Paris.
Dylan wrote, "I was struck by the song 'Joy,' where he sang 'We've all been through so much sadness, it's time for joy.'" And I thought to myself, yeah, that's right. "
Cave wrote on his Red Hand Archives website that Dylan's post was a "lovely pulse of joy." He added: "Because I doubt I'll ever get the chance to thank him in person, I'll thank him here. Thank you, Bob!
The increased visibility on X coincides with Dylan's recent tour and preparations for the release of A Complete Unknown , with the singer taking to the social media platform to mark the film's release. Dylan's X account has previously been used to post non-personal content, such as tour date announcements and official statements.
However, TikTok's move represents Dylan's latest move on social media, which has been filled with personal posts since last year.
