The Marion County Sports Association will soon name its City and County Athlete of the Year, a prize that dates back to 1950 and grew into a 1979 girl achievement.

The award is designed to achieve athletic achievements, but over the years, almost all winners have shown impressive credentials in their sport, academic and personal fields. Usually, a multi-sport athlete considers a single runner, although in some cases a single athlete is so outstanding that he or she is chosen as the winner.

Here are three finalists for City Male Athlete of the Year (Sam Feeney of Principal Chaward won the championship last year):

Dezmon Briscoe, Crispus Attucks

Briscoe, a four-year Letterman and Kent State Recruit, finished fourth in the program's history with a score of 1,181 points, and is a finalist for the Indystar Basketball and Indiana All-Star. He also set a plan record with 953 rebounds and 375 blocks.

Briscoe, a sophomore and junior of the year, missed 10 games early in the high school season due to a sprained ankle after leading the Tigers to two City Championship titles. He averaged 15.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.1 blocks per game and helped the Tigers reach the Class 3A national finals. In 91 professional games, he averaged 13.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Briscoe served in Attucks for four years. His goal is to work in sports management in NBA games and careers.

Kalen Sargent

Sargent is a seven-time highlight of football and track and field and plans to continue his track and field career at Indiana University.

Sargent played for the Trojans’ 4x400 relay team, which ranked second in state as a junior. He is a sophomore, 200m and 4x400 relay city champion for junior and senior year and won his senior year with a 100m. Sargent is the division champion for the 200, 400 and 4x400 relay teams and has helped his team win the city championship in four years.

Sargent helped his football team become national champions for sophomore and juniors. His 4x400 relay team set a school record with 3:15.38.

Devaughn Slaughter, Cathedral

Slaughter is a seven-time highlight of the Cathedral football and track and field competition, planning to attend Tennessee State University and play football at the university.

Slaughter was named City Football Player of the Year after 43 passes for 562 yards and 6 touchdowns. In three seasons, he scored 996 yards and 102 passes with 13 TDs. The massacre also passed two TDs, with an average of 32.5 yards in kick-off returns.

In track and field, Slaughter is a three-time city champion and a five-time state qualifier. He ran the 4x100 relay team as his fourth-ranked junior in the state.

Slaughter is a 6A-level statewide football game and has maintained three state records.
