There are still seven men after New Orleans escape | New Orleans

Seven men — including one convicted of four people, others charged with murder — after the New Orleans prison breakout, officials feared that it might have been activated by the help of their post.

A total of 10 people participated in the bold overnight escape, fleeing a hole behind the toilet and scaling the wall, while the lonely guards assigned to their cell pods were reluctant to eat food.

Officials said three of the escapees were caught within hours and continued to search for people still scattered on Saturday.

Surveillance video shared with the media at the press conference showed escapees sprinting through the facilities - some in orange clothes, while others in white. They scaled the fence with blankets to avoid being cut by barbed wire, and then some people could be seen sprinting on nearby interstates and entering neighborhoods.

Photos obtained by numerous news media outlets, including The Guardian, show that the opening behind the toilet in the cell escaped after it was removed. Above the hole is a scattered message, which includes profane: "to Easy LoL", the arrow points to the gap, and "catch us as much as possible."

The absence of the 10 men also took advantage of the facilities flaws that officials have long complained about, but did not notice for hours. It was not until more than seven hours later that law enforcement learned the time of escape.

Sheriff's Office officials said no deputy was in the fugitive's pod. They said there was a technician there, a civilian, who could observe the pods, but she had walked away from the food.

Shortly after the escape, the suspect was charged with murdering Kendall Myles, 20, was arrested after a brief chasing the French Quarter. He had escaped twice before from a juvenile detention center.

By Friday night, two more fugitives were present. According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, officials found the battery suspect Robert Moody in the Central City section of New Orleans in New Orleans, thanks to the tips from criminals. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill discovered armed robbery suspect Dkenan Dennis near the Eastern New Orleans Expressway, announcing on social media platform X.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said the men were able to leave the Orleans Justice Center because of the “flawed locks.” Hutson said she had been constantly worried about the lockdown of officials until she advocated for money to repair the sick infrastructure this week.

Hutson said there were signs that people inside her department helped the fugitive escape.

"It's almost impossible, not entirely, but it's almost impossible for anyone to leave the facility," she said of the prison.

The escaper tugged a door and entered the cell at about 1 a.m. Friday.

At least one steel rod that protects the pipe fixture “appeared to have been intentionally cut with tools,” according to a statement from the Orleans Sheriff’s Office on Friday night.

Officials said the men took off their prison uniforms once they left the facility, and it was unclear how some of them had obtained regular clothing so quickly.

Three sheriff’s employees were suspended before the findings. It is not clear whether any employees are suspected to help escape. Officials have not disclosed whether the guards who were leaving the food were among the three suspended.

The ages of the escaped person range from 19 to 42 years old. Most are in their 20s.

One of the fugitives, Derrick Groves, was convicted on two counts of second-degree murder, and the two counts of attempted second-degree murder were at an October trial after he played the fatal four-legged shooting in Tuesday 2018. 2024.

The murder was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment. But after his attorney was suspended, he stayed in New Orleans prison instead of state prisons and suspended legal proceedings in a double murder trial pending his double murder case.

Law enforcement warned that Groves could try to find witnesses in the murder.

Four others - Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen, Jermaine Donald and Leo Tate - were charged with murder. Gary Price, 21, is charged with attempted murder.

Hutson said the police department is actively working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to find fugitives.

Hutson said the prison staff is about 60%.
