In May 2025, Mozilla announced that it would close the popular Read-It-Later App Pocket, which was acquired in 2017 in an undisclosed quantity.
While Pocket has helped users save and discovered millions of articles, Mozilla said the way people browse the web is changing and plans to focus resources on other projects.
Pocket users must export their saved articles and other items, including lists, archives, favorites, notes and highlights by October 8, 2025. Essentially, this means you will have to find a new home to build a reading list with another save effects app.

Matter is a company powered by Google Ventures, which works with Chrome, Safari, and Firefox to make iOS apps of the same name as well as browser extensions. The app allows you to listen to articles and also transcribe your favorite podcasts. While the app itself is free to use, you can pay $79.99 per year to unlock improved transcription of podcasts and YouTube videos, tools to adjust reading speeds, and other integrations with other apps like Notes Apps, Gmail, and Kindle.
In March 2025, the company also added an AI-powered co-reader to answer questions about different topics users may encounter when reading articles.
Matter co-founder Ben Springwater said Pocket users can email him via Ben@getmatter.com to get a link to personal discount. The company will soon offer discounts in its app and will initiate the migration process for Pocket users.
Founded in 2008 by developer Marco Arment, Instapaper is one of the oldest reader apps. It's available on both iOS and Android, allowing you to save unlimited articles and videos without paying anything. It was acquired by Pinterest in 2016.
However, at $59.99 per year, you can add notes to saved articles, have permanent article archives in your account, create text-to-voice playlists to listen to stories, enable full text searches for all saved items, and gain the ability to send articles to your Kindle.
The company said Pocket users can import their accounts into Instapaper on Instapaper.com/user. Users who import this way will also receive an email with a free three-month trial for Instapaper Premium.
Raindrop is mainly a replacement bookmark manager for web browsers. However, it comes with iOS and Android mobile apps that let you read saved articles or PDFs at any time. The free version provides you with unlimited bookmark savings and integrations like Zapier and IFTTT.
If you decide to pay $33 per year, you will get AI-powered advice to better organize content, full-text searches, reminders of bookmarks, duplicate and broken link finders, and a 10GB monthly file upload limit.
Former Twitter engineer Joe Fabisevich created Plinky to allow users to save and categorize any type of links, including articles, videos, recipes and memes. The app is available on all Apple platforms, as well as a browser extension to save links. After signing up, Plinky allows you to categorize your links using folders and tags, and even set reminders to read them at a specific time.
You can save 50 links, create three folders, and use five tags in the free version. To remove these restrictions, you can pay $3.99 per month, $39.99 per year or a one-time fee of $159.99. Pro users are able to save unlimited links, create unlimited number of folders, use unlimited number of tags, and set unlimited number of reminders.
Fabisevich said that with the Pocket shutdown, dedicated reader mode will be added soon. The app also offers a 50% discount by the end of May 2025.
PaperSpan is a very simple application that provides a reading list across devices; allows you to add notes; and has text-to-speech capabilities. The app is free, but it offers a $8.99 monthly subscription to unlock advanced searches, as well as the ability to create playlists, display reading statistics and send your articles to the Kindle. Although the app works, Paperspan has not been updated for a while, which may not be a good sign for its long-term future. The app is available on iOS and Android.
This is a tool to add notes and highlights to articles, launching the Reader app in 2021. The app allows you to import RSS feeds, YouTube videos, Twitter threads, and more at your convenience. Thanks to its integration with relapses, the Reader app provides excellent annotation capabilities. It also has offline text search and an AI assistant.
Additionally, you can combine readers with knowledge management applications such as Obsidian, Concepts, Roaming Research, Evernote, and LogSeq. The app is free to try for 30 days, and then you have to order $9.99 per month to access it.
Readers are asking pocket users to save the entire pocket archive to readers, noting that its app supports many features such as PDF, EPUBS, X posts, AI and filtering - bags never do it.
Doublememory is a new standalone app focused on the Apple ecosystem, with native apps for both Mac and iOS. On a Mac, you can easily save any link or content by pressing "CMD + C" twice. The saved content will then appear in Pinterest-style tile format.
The app also allows you to read offline and search for text, notes and tags. You don't need an account to start using Doublememory. And, if you have multiple apps, use your iCloud account to sync content.
Doublememory is available for free in-app purchases. It offers a monthly subscription of $3.99 or an annual subscription of $17.99.
Recall works are browser extensions and mobile apps that allow users to save content from the network, including articles, PDFs, blog posts, podcasts, Wikipedia pages, YouTube videos and recipes. But unlike traditional reader apps, recalls automatically summarize content using AI, classify it, and then repaint it when it relates to new things you want to learn.
Designed to enhance your ability to remember information, you can view summary from your personal knowledge base based on the saved repetitive schedule.
Recalls are free to try to support up to 10 free AI-generated digests. After that, you can continue to use the recall as a reading material tool or upgrade to a $7 per month plan for unlimited AI summary and other features.
wallabag is an open source reader application that can also be offered for a hosted subscription of €11 per year if you prefer. The app itself works across browsers and mobile devices, provides a reader mode for more comfortable reading and supports importing data from other services like Pocket, Instapaper, and more.
The open source web application ReadEck is designed to help you organize any web content you want to revisit later, whether it's articles, videos, photos or anything else. You can also use the service to emphasize text, export articles to e-book formats, save video transcripts, and more.
ReadEck can be used as a browser extension so you can save bookmarks while browsing the web. Users can host Readeck themselves, but the company says it will offer a hosted version in 2025. It is also developing mobile applications.
Obsidian's web editing service allows you to highlight and capture the web pages you want to save, clicking only its browser extension. You can also use customize templates for certain types of web pages to save. For example, articles are saved with citations and footnotes, while recipes will include ingredients, steps and nutrition. You can even set up custom templates to save from your favorite websites.
As an open source application, web clippers are available for free, allowing blocks of text, images, and content to be highlighted for saving into the Obsidian Notes app.
Karakeep's bookmarking app lets you save links, notes, and images, and then automatically tag items with AI and make them retrieved faster. The app also includes other features such as support lists, batch operations, dark mode, full text search, and more.

Dewey is another “Save All Content” style app that allows you to save and organize web links, videos and images, including posts from social media sites like X, Tiktok, Bluesky, Threads, Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn and more.
The service provides built-in organization tools such as folders and tags, AI batch tags, keyboard shortcuts, automatic synchronization to concepts, exports, personalized RSS feeds, and more. Dewey offers multiple plans starting at $7.50 per month, and you can choose to pay for $30 per year.
