The opening and closing ceremony locations of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics reveal

One of Los Angeles’ historic, oldest stadiums, and the city’s latest will share the Olympic ceremonial stage in 2028.

The Los Angeles Memorial Stadium in Los Angeles Memorial Park and the Sofi Stadium in Inglewood will be announced Thursday that it will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games.

The Stadium and Sofi Stadium will share the opening ceremony on July 14, 2028. The closing ceremony is scheduled to be held on July 30, 2028 at the Los Angeles Memorial Stadium, which will become the first venue in history to host three Olympic events.

La Memorial Coliseum previously provided the stage for Olympic events in 1932 and 1984.

“The venues participating in the opening and closing 2028 will highlight Los Angeles’ rich sports history and cutting-edge future, showing the best L.A. has to offer on the world stage,” said LA28 Chairman and Casey Wasserman. “These two extraordinary venues will create memorable experiences, welcome fans from all over the world to attend Olympics and Paralympics like never before, and conclude that it is one of the most incredible games in history.”

The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games on August 15, 2028 will be held at Sofi Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. The closing ceremony on August 27 will be held in the gymnasium.

As for the venue, last month, plans for the 2028 Olympic Games became clearer, when it revealed locations for more than a dozen sports, including beach volleyball, surfing and baseball. LA28 presented the International Olympic Committee with the latest list of venues for the 2028 Olympic Games, which signed the committee last month on updated plans.

Venues for more sports were announced earlier, including LA Memorial Coliseum, the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, BMO Stadium in Exposition Park, the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA, the sports complex in Carson, Rose Bowl in Pasadena and several sites outside the city of Los Angeles, including canoe slalom and softball, which are set for Oklahoma City.

The 2028 medal event plan has six new mixed-gender team activities in what the LA28 organizing committee calls a “huge step”. The program approved the 2028 medal event, more than 351 years in Paris in 2024.

Added mixed team activities in 2028 include rhythmic gymnastics, track and field (4x100 mixed gender relays), golf, archery (compound bow), coastal boating beach sprints and table tennis. The competition format for the new Rhythmic Gymnastics Mixed Team Event will be finalized and announced later.

Medal competitions include expanded areas for women’s football and water polo competitions, new women’s boxing weight classes, expanded 3x3 basketball courts, and more medal events for swimming and sports climbing.

Flag Football will debut in 2028, while Lacrosse will return to the medal sports lineup for the first time in more than a century. Baseball and softball will make their Olympics comeback, and cricket will be part of the lineup as well.
