The World Meteorological Organization says naming storms can help meteorologists, media and public officials easily communicate about forecasts and warnings to help the public prepare.

"Assigning the name to a tropical cyclone makes it easier to track and discuss specific storms, especially when multiple storms are active at the same time," the agency said on its website.

The World Meteorological Organization says the storm has been named for a long time, but has historically been called "a random fact."

It was not until 1953 that the National Hurricane Center began using the alphabet list. At the time, they were just women's names. Male names have been added since 1979.

Which hurricane names have retired?

According to NOAA, nearly 100 names have retired from the Atlantic hurricane name list since 1954.

Three names for the 2024 season are retired: Beryl, Helene and Milton.

Some other notable retirement names include Ian (2022), Aida (2021), Harvey (2017), Emma (2017), Maria (2017), sand (2012) and Hurricane Katrina (2005).
